Downton Abbey Inspired 1920's Garden Party!
Host a perfect movie release party or celebrate the 20's with a Roaring Twenties Soiree!
Let's start at the beginning.
I love to dress up. It's like my favorite hobby. Normally I just wear black yoga pants and a black shirt...but I love to get dressed up in costumes. So naturally I love having parties that have a fun costume dress code...and PRIZES for the Best Costumes!
The Perfect 1920's Party Tablescape:
This table is super simple but elegant.
- A plastic tablecloth covered with lace
- Rose Gold Yo-Yo Hanging Fans
- Tiered Serving Trays
- Polished Silver Tea Set
- Art Deco
- Fairy Light Curtain
To host a more cost effective party or girl's night, ask the guests to bring a finger food to share. I am always impressed at the amount of goodies at a girl party!
I set up another table for food brought to the party by the guests. I had a crockpot full of meatballs and a box of 30 cream puffs.
I bought this amazing RED dress at Goodwill when I lived in Alabama about 5 years ago. I have never worn it. Last year I thought about wearing it for Halloween...but it was too tight.
Thankfully I've gotten in better shape this year and the dress fit like a dream. The three layers of fringe made this dress so much fun to wear!
This Scallop Fringe Dress made a debut
Or this fabulous Gold and Black Fringe
One guest even wore a wig...can you find it???
For a party favor and craft I had a separate table set up. The guests assembled tassel keychains with pliers and got to pick a hair clip to take home.
Here's the supplies I used: aff links
Tassel Key Chain Kit20 Vintage Hair Clips
Pearl Beaded Hair Clips
The nice part about hosting a girls night party is there does not need to be lots of entertainment. They are more than happy to talk to each other and enjoy a night out. If you are hosting families, setting up some games for kids is a fun option.
Polish the silver--so well that Mr. Carson would be proud! Get Mrs. Pattmore to make some tarts! Find anything art deco style, geometric, gold, lacy, string lights, tiered trays, silver, china and anything fancy!
Okay, let's talk about 1920's hair. Disclosure: I am not a beauty blogger. Even as long as the Crawley girls hair is, they always wear it up. I decided to give it a go. I have super long hair, but I curled it with a tiny curling wand.
It ended up about a foot shorter than my straight hair! I curled all of it, then gently brushed it to smooth out the waves. I used clips to push the curls forward and back to frame my face and sprayed with hairspray. Then I put on my rhinestone headband and removed the clips.
Next I split my hair into 2 sections and just twisted them up in the back, so they could be seen slightly from the front and claw clipped them in place. Then secured a few bobby pins.
This faux bob is a fun look for someone like me that always has really long hair. I stuck a couple peacock feathers into the headband to finish off the look. Then add some fringe and a long necklace and you are gold.
Costume Contest:
Here's how I run my costume contests without a dedicated panel of judges:
I pass out 3 carnival type tickets to each guest. They mingle and walk around and hand out their tickets to the 3 people whose costumes they love. Then the guests count up their tickets and see who has the most, second most and so on. I award the top 3 costumes the prizes.
This way everyone has a chance to vote...if they really like someone's costume, they could give them all 3 tickets. I wouldn't allow myself to win my own contest, so I ask them not to give them to me...or I just re-give them to others.
First Prize won a Gold and Pearl Tiara
Second Place won a Sequined Clutch
Thrid Place won a Pearl and Rhinestone Necklace
Who do you think won the Costume Contest?
That's it! Hope this gives you the confidence and some fun ideas to host your own Roaring 20's Flapper party!
