Rainbow Layered Cake with Washi Tape Bunting Topper DIY!
Make the perfect rainbow layered cake with an adorable washi tape bunting topper, even if cake skills are not really your thing. Okay, let's be honest here...cake is not my thing. I like to show my kids that I put forth effort in making birthday cakes and such, but I am not going to put lots of time into cake making or decorating.
This rainbow layered cake is so much fun! Just cutting into it makes me happy! Add some frosting, candy and a cute cake topper is the perfect way to finish it off.
My mom used to work at a bakery and decorate cakes. She made many wedding cakes and loved to pipe flowers, ornate trims and decorations with frosting. This is one of her skills that I did not inherit. I just don't love to spend tons of time on something that is just going to get eaten.
This cake looks rough, but it's the perfect amount of effort for a fun cake!
Supplies for Rainbow Layered Cake with topper:
Seriously, this is gold. This cake pan set has 5 six inch pans that only use one box of cake mix and can all fit in the oven at the same time. Gold, I tell ya!
White Cake Mix
White Frosting
Piping Bag or just a knife
2 Paper Straws
12 inches of Bakers Twine
Washi Tape
Baking the Cakes:
Begin by mixing up the box cake mix according to the package directions. Then pour into 5 small bowls equally. It's about 1 cup of mix per bowl. Then mix them with a drop or 2 of the food coloring gel and stir until mixed. Then pour the colored cake batter into the cake pans. Six inch cakes are perfection! I love the size for every occasion.
Let the cakes bake in the oven until they spring back. Then remove them from the oven and let them cool down completely. Then remove the cakes from the mold and stack them on a plate or cake stand with frosting in between.
Then add more frosting to the outside of the cake, pipe or decorate the cake to your hearts content.
Making the Cake Topper:
Begin by tying the bakers twine to the paper straws. The bakers twine should be tight enough to fit across the cake when placed in it but not touch the cake.
Then use strips of washi tape and fold them over the bakers twine and then pressed on themselves.
Repeat the washi tape for the full bunting and cut the ends of the washi tape in a v or reverse point. This is the cutest little bunting and takes no time at all to make!
Then stick the paper straws into the cake, sort of bent outward to make a cute scoop with the bunting. I sprinkled mini m&m's over the cake and don't really love it. The primary colors versus the pastels in the cake are kind of clashy. Oh well...the cake was eaten anyway!
This cute rainbow layered cake would be perfect to celebrate Spring, St. Patricks Day or any day of the week!
These less than impressive, box cake mix, crumbly slices are only exciting because of the colorful layers. This cake was a hit!
That's it!
