How to Paint Watercolor Galaxy Crystals!

Painting a watercolor galaxy is such a fun technique, and painting them in little crystal clusters is absolutely dreamy! Geometric crystals are so fun to draw and much more simple than you might think! This fun craft is easy for all skill levels and great for beginners.

These cute watercolor crystal cards can be used as a quick note to leave with a treat for a friend or hide in public as part of the #SharingArtMatters campaign. I received products from Tombow for this post. 

I love crystals. When I was little, I wanted all the shiny rocks, sparkly crystals and faceted jewels! Okay, actually, nothing has changed. I also really love all things galaxy--so these are the perfect combination!

I love how these look iridescent too! They would look great with some glitter or even a coat of shimmery nail polish over the top.

Supplies Needed for Watercolor Galaxy Crystal Art:

Watercolor Paper (cut into 6 x 4.5")

Pencil

Tombow Dual Brush Pens (555, 452, 133, N15)

Tombow Glue Pen

Tombow Water Brush

Tombow Fudenosuke Blue Pen

Tombow MONO Eraser

Step 1: How to Draw Crystals

Begin by drawing a kite shaped diamond with a tiny flat bottom. Then draw a line across from point to point. Then draw facet lines from the top point to the cross line, then down to the bottom point. Finish off the crystals with a variety of simple shapes in a cluster.

Step 2: Draw Crystals on Watercolor Paper

Draw a cluster of crystals on the watercolor paper with the instructions above.

Then use the mono eraser and lightly erase the lines...just erase them enough to still be able to see them.

Step 3: Trace the Crystals with Glue Pen

Now use the Tombow Glue Pen and outline the lines of the crystals and little stars, then let the glue dry completely. The glue pen acts as a watercolor resist, leaving a white line and a cool effect for the crystals.

Step 4: Color the Galaxy

Now add color with the Dual Brush Pens using little scribbles, starting with the lightest colors then darker colors.

These little studies are small and don't need much color. 

Step 5: Blend the Color with the Water Brush

Now blend the colors with the water brush starting with the lightest color and blending outward to the darker colors.

Blend a little shadow below the crystals if desired. Then set it aside and let it dry completely.

Trust me, after doing one, you'll be hooked all day!

Try out some different colors and figure out your favorite combinations.

Repeat the process of blending colors with the water brush.

After you get comfortable with drawing crystals the way I illustrated above, try your hand at different shapes, faceted diamonds and little star bits.

 I love this rainbow cluster...it just worked like magic! I used bright pink and yellow and got fabulous shades of orange.

I love how these turned out. I'll be painting more of these all weekend!

Step 6: Add some Hand Lettering

Finish off these little pieces of art with a hand lettered note using the Fudenosuke Pen. Some positive vibes for those lucky enough to find these.
