Get House Ready to Sell with Red Front Door Update

Are you getting your home ready to sell? Maybe you are just looking to update the look of your home. Every house needs a RED door!

Paint your door red for a pop of color that will add curb appeal and refresh the look. Painting an exterior door may be a little intimidating, but it's actually quite simple.

This cute house was getting fixed up to sell, but needed a little pop. The front door was spray painted gray...and the paint was chipping off.

Preparation for this door was important to remove the lacquer finish so the new paint would adhere properly. I began by using a grinder and sanding down the door. I left it hanging in place, but you could do a more thorough job by taking it down.

After sanding, apply a good primer to the door. Primer just gets it ready for painting, but looks awful. Just remember it is not meant to look even or smooth at all. It will just look discouraging. Don't give up.

I had a few red choices but decided on Poppy! My supplies came from Plaid, as part of their blogger team.

Supplies Needed to Paint a Door Red:

Paint on Primer
Waverly Paint (16 ounces)
2 inch Paint Brush
Detail Paint Brush
Small Foam Roller and Pan
Painters Tape
Wash Cloth
Bucket full of warm water

This Waverly paint is by Plaid and available at Walmart.

Begin by taping off the window, door hardware and the sides of the door before painting. Crack the door open and wedge big pieces of cardboard under the door and on the porch.

Then go over the door with a layer of primer. Let it dry completely--it will look awful. (see this post) Then paint the door red.

Start by using the detail paint brush and paint around the edges, windows and door hardware. Then paint the bulk of the door with the 2 inch brush. Use up and down brush strokes only.

Okay, brace yourselves. This door needed SIX coats of red paint! Six! It was a lot of work that I did over the week. Painting a new coat of paint every morning and letting the sunshine dry it during the day.

In the end it was just what this cute house needed. The yellow brick goes perfectly with the bright red door. When painting a door, don't be afraid of color!

That's it!
