How to Spray Paint Rolling Storage Cart DIY Makeover!
I love to keep things organized. I have a craft room, but it's basically a craft storage room. I pull out the supplies I need into my family room, where I have a giant craft table, and work from there. If I decide to clean things up, I can put them back into my craft room.
This is a pretty sweet system...and I have a ton of craft supplies! So I started using a few rolling carts like this. I can put all my Cricut crafting stuff in one, and wheel it out when I need it. I also have another cart full of my Tombow art supplies.
I got a couple rolling carts and decided to paint one of them Mermaid, or teal. It's a quick DIY that makes me happy. Let's get started!
Supplies Needed for Painted Rolling Cart:
- 3 Tiered Metal Rolling Cart
- Colorshot Spray Paint in Mermaid
- Well Ventilated Area
If you are upcycling an old cart from a yard sale or an old library cart, you may need to do a little prep work before spray painting.
Use a little bit of steel wool or light grit sandpaper to prep the little rolling cart. If it's been painted before, some sanding or paint stripper may be necessary.
New paint (in your favorite color) is the next step in transforming the entire cart into additional storage space!
My tiered cart came in gray. It's fine, some people love a great neutral...but I needed something a little more me.
I used Mermaid paint because I love teal...but pick the color you love most.
Begin by opening up the box and assembling the cart. It's just easier to paint it when it's all ready put together.
If you paint it all first, it's easy to scratch the paint while assembling.
If you have an old piece of furniture you can give it new life with a little spray painting.
Steps for Painting a Metal Tiered Rolling Storage Cart:
- Step 1: First step, place the assembled rolling cart on a drop cloth or on cardboard in a well-ventilated area.
- Step 2: Tape anything you don't want painted with painter’s tape.
- Step 3: Shake the spray paint for a minute. Then spray light coats of spray paint on the metal frame, from about 6 inches away.
- Step 4: Apply a second coat of spray paint after 10 minutes of drying. Repeat 10 minutes later if needed.
- Step 5: Let the finished product dry for at least 4 hours...or overnight.
I put my cart in the box it arrived in and tape off the wheels with painters tape to keep them shiny gold.
Then spray the cart according to the package directions--start with a single light layer and letting it dry for 10 minutes between thin layers.
I did three coats of paint, letting them dry briefly between layers. I completely painted over the hardware bolts but not the wheels.
The best part is you can paint the cart your favorite color, or even ombre shades or mixing a whole rainbow of colors.
That's it!
It holds up great and looks amazing. I love this color so much!
I keep all my crafting goodies organized with these carts and they are easy to roll around as needed.

Here's more fun using my tiered storage carts!
I have 5 rolling carts and I love them.
I am able to roll them out of my craft room--which is basically a storage room--and bring them out to my craft table.
I have one cart filled with my Cricut Joy, Cricut blanks, Iron-on and Insert Cards.
I have another tiered cart filled with hand lettering and calligraphy and watercolor products.
I have a third tool cart filled with all my stained glass supplies.
Another cart is filled with rubber stamps, ink pads and paper craft supplies, like washi tape.
I use them all the time and love that they hold a ton of product and can roll around easily, so I can store things behind them and then move them as needed.
Here's other ways I've used my carts:
