How to Make a Faux Jade Resin Stick Barrette!
Learn how to make a faux jade stick barrette. It's a breeze using Easy Sculpt epoxy clay and scrap tooling leather. Perfect for totally chic hairstyles!
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR FAUX JADE LEATHER STICK BARRETTE:
Easy Sculpt Self-Hardening Epoxy Modeling Clay
Castin’ Craft Color Pigment in Green and Brown
Thick Scrap Leather
Cornstarch or Baby Powder
Hobby Knife
Teflon or non stick work surface
Gloves
STEP 1: MIXING THE EASY SCULPT CLAY
Begin by mixing one part of the resin clay with one part of the resin hardener together. Mix them until there is no marbling.
Then put a little green color pigment in the clay and mix thoroughly. Add more color as needed. I used the green and some brown to make a faux jade effect.
Use the cornstarch to keep the clay from getting too sticky while mixing.
STEP 2: FORMING THE EPOXY CLAY
The Easy Sculpt Clay is very soft and workable for a couple hours. Let it sit on the non stick surface for about 30 minutes.
Then split up the Easy Sculpt into smaller balls and let them sit on the non stick surface for another 30 minutes. I made 4 sticks.
Now form the Easy Sculpt resin into long sticks about 6 inches long. Then again, let them sit for another 30 minutes.
After they start to feel more firm, roll them out smoothly, with a point on one end. Then let them sit on the non stick surface, rotating them every 10 minutes so they don’t get flat on one side, for the next hour or so. Then let them sit overnight to harden.
STEP 3: LEATHER SCRAP
Use some thick scrap leather and cut out some ovals. I just cut, I didn’t make a template or anything fancy.
Then use the hobby knife to pierce holes on both sides of the leather oval. Pierce the blade through the leather in a hexagon shape to make a circle about the size of the sticks.
The sticks should be a little snug to hold it firmly in the hair. Push a stick through the leather barrette and back through the other side.
That’s it! These fun leather stick barrettes will look fabulous around a ponytail. The two separate sticks are perfect for sticking in the top of a bun.
Enjoy--makes a great handmade gift too!
