Maleficent Disney Inspired Halloween Costume Cosplay Staff DIY!
The Maleficent movie is so much fun. The costumes are amazing and every element is just full of textures, layers and depth.
Can you tell I like seeing the costumes more than the actual movies? This iconic villian has the most enchanting magical staff.
It's totally a necessary prop for any Halloween costume or Fandom Cosplayer. This is how to make the perfect Maleficent staff from the live action movies or the old classic Sleeping Beauty.
Make a Maleficent light-up scepter complete with Diaval the crow on top!
I built this 4 years ago and it's still a hit!
The staff is shown glowing in a blueish-green hue, wrapped in twig-like branches.
Well, well! The perfect staff!
Supplies Needed:
- A wooden dowel (about $4)
- Feathered Crow
- Polly Plastic (moldable plastic)
- Dollar store battery powered flicker candle
- Round orb/vase (we scored this at a thrift store for $1)
First, the light up mechanism. Begin by taking the light up candle apart.
Save the battery connected to the switch and the LED light.
Drill a hole in the top of the dowel and the side, making them meet up in the middle. Then pull the light through carefully with a bent wire as a "needle".
Use hot glue and set the light and the battery in place. Then slip the vase on the end of the dowel over the light. It's a little loose but pretty perfect! I hot glued it in place.
Then check and make sure the light still works.
Next, microwaved 2 cups of water in a glass pitcher. Then add a couple spoon fulls of Polly Plastic. It goes from white to clear...then it is ready to mold.
Pull it out of the water and it is remarkably easy to touch and form! Careful though, it's still hot.
Mold the plastic into woven branches and stick-like tentacles from the dowel to the vase.
Let it cool down completely--at which point it will turn back into the white plastic color.
Reinforce any areas with hot glue. Then painting!
Spray painted the whole dowel black, easier that way.
Then I used a paint brush and brown/black paints for the branchy details.
So far, so awesome! If you are making the staff without the crow, you are finished!
This would make a great wizard or mage staff...but to truly be Maleficent you need your sidekick Diaval!
Next, hot glue those little crows feet on the top of the staff! It's remarkably sturdy!
Once that glue dries, paint it to match. Easy peasy!
Now check again to see if the light still works! Phew, success!
Perfection! It looks just like the movie prop!
It's that subtle green tinge glow! It's absolutely awesome!
