How to Make a Grinch Ornament (Easy DIY with Cricut)
Make a darling Grinch inspired ornament, filled with green candy for the perfect finishing touch!
This is great for neighbor or friend gifts, a loving teacher--maybe filled with some cash, or family members.
This cute DIY Grinch ornament takes less than 30 minutes, so it's the perfect Christmas tree decoration or last minute gift!
You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch! I love the Dr. Seuss story "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".
I even love all three movie adaptations.
Honestly, I love the newest, The Grinch Movie the most.
I love the end when he is invited to dinner and realizes that he didn't hate Christmas, he just hated being alone.
He toasts "To kindness and love, the things we need most!"
If ever this was true, it's today. Since 2020, the holidays have been lonely and isolating to so many people.
Take some time to be kind to your neighbor, the person ahead of you in the checkout line at the store, or to that person passing by.
Supplies Needed for Grinch Face Ornament:
- Fillable Ornament (This one is from Dollar Tree)
- Black Adhesive Vinyl
- Green Candy (A Green Feather Boa or rolls of cash)
- Cricut Machine
- Transfer Paper
- Cricut Vinyl Tools (Hook, Scraper)
Do you have a Cricut Machine? Are you thinking about getting one? It's my favorite tool!
If you don't have a Cricut or equivalent, you can carefully cut the image out with an exacto knife or craft knife.
Step 1: Cut the Vinyl
Right click to save off this Grinch's face image and import it into Cricut Design Space. (or find any other picture of the Grinch)
Then cut it out of black adhesive vinyl.
Mine is 1.75 inches wide to fit the width of the plastic ornament.
Step 2: Weed Vinyl
Then remove the vinyl from the Cricut mat and weed the excess vinyl away.
Go slow and use a hook tool since the cut out is small and has little pieces.
Clean off the surface of the plastic or glass ornaments with a little rubbing alcohol.
A huge variety of ornaments are available at dollar stores...so get creative and get the whole family involved!
Then place some transfer tape on the vinyl.
Step 3: Place Vinyl
Peel off the white backing, leaving the vinyl adhered to the transfer tape.
Then place it on the outside of the ornament right on the center of the front.
The best way is to start by placing it down on the transfer tape at the top of the ornament and see if it's in the right place before pressing the whole face down.
When satisfied with the placement, rub the vinyl down from the top to the bottom to remove any air bubbles.
Step 4: Remove Transfer Tape
Rub the vinyl firmly with a scraper tool or credit card to help it all to adhere in place.
Then peel back the transfer tape by rolling it over itself revealing the perfect mr. grinch ornament!
That little snarky face! His facial features are the best part of this fun Grinch Christmas ornament.
Ta Da!
The easy Grinch craft ornament is done--basically! Such a cute and easy Christmas craft!
Make a whole collection of adorable DIY Grinch Christmas ornaments to fill the Christmas tree with Grinch decorations or to give out as handmade gifts to neighbors, teachers and friends.
This easy project uses just a few craft supplies, although the vinyl cutting could be done in advanced, so that every crafty gal (no skill level required) you know can come make their own homemade Christmas ornament.
Now it can be filled with anything green!
I used giant chocolate balls, but something smaller would be much more darling, especially if it fills the entire inside of the ornament.
Fill it with Mod Podge and bright green glitter.
Fill it with a green pom pom or a little bit more!
Use polyacrylic and green paint to coat the inside of the ornament before adding the vinyl decal.
You could roll up pieces paper or use it as a way to gift money!
Cut a feather boa and fill the ornament with a small piece of the boa.
What would you fill your adorable Grinch Ornaments with?
Hang it on the tree to remind you to share kindness and love to all those around you.
I heard a wonderful talk a couple years ago that gave some excellent advice:
"When you meet someone, treat them as if they were in serious trouble, and you will be right more than half the time.” He goes on to say, "Not only was he right, but I have learned over the years that he was too low in his estimate."
Some people are facing the worst moments of their lives...
I remember back when I was a junior in high school, mid January, I found out during school that my mom had died. My darkest day. I was devastated but had to attend class to take a end of semester test.
I hugged my friend when I saw her in the hall and I heard a boy walk by and make an incredibly mean comment.
I was shocked. He had no idea the depth of my sorrow.
However, I am glad for that experience. It's helped me to have more empathy for the people I meet, so I don't make a rude judgement call on someone else's moment of darkness.
Treat everyone as if they are in serious trouble...and more often than not, you'll be right.
Have you had a similar experience or a moment of kindness that changed your outlook on things?
Make an easy Grinch ornament craft and share it to brighten someone's day to remind them of the true meaning of Christmas (it's Christ) in a fun way.
Add a piece of ribbon, a piece of the marabou feather boa, a pine sprig or maybe even a mini Santa hat with some hot glue to the top of the ornament for some added color and so much fun.
Clear ornaments are my favorite, but you can use green ornaments for this Dr. Seuss DIY too!

How to Make a Handwriting Ornament with Sublimation
Turn a loved ones handwriting into a treasured ornament using sublimation.
When a person passes away, everything they worte, said or made becomes a treasure. My mom passed away from cancer in January 1998 and I decided to turn her handwriting into ornaments this year.
I scoured through all my old notes, pictures and papers to find the perfect sample of her writing.
I found the last line in a letter she wrote me, when she knew she was going to die, and it was such a wonderful letter legacy.
