How to Make an Envelope Pillow Case!

If there is anything that just sings of the Winter holidays, it's velvet! That rich, creamy fabric is soft and luxurious. Unfortunately velvet is super pricy by the yard...but I have a secret to get it much cheaper!

Make a throw pillow worthy of White Christmas made of velvet and only 4 straight stitches of sewing.

Supplies Needed for Velvet Pillow:

50x20 inches of Velvet

Sewing Machine

Velvet tip:

I bought this velvet skirt at the thrift store for $4. This is the best way for me to purchase velvet...the bigger the skirt, the better!

Step 1: Make Pattern

Tape and cut a piece of paper to 20x20 inches. Then place it on the top of the velvet. Then pin it in place and cut out the velvet with sharp scissors.

Step 2: Create the Envelope Back

Because I am using an upcycled skirt, the bottom edge is already hemmed. Overlap 2 of the hem edges about 6-8 inches. This will create the envelope finish.

Step 3: Right Sides Together

Then place the 20 inch square of velvet right on top of the overlapped layer, with the soft "right" side of the velvet touching.

Then pin the layers together, especially pin the overlap so it stays flat while sewing.

Then cut the bottom layer to match the top.

Step 4: Sewing

Now sew a straight stitch on all 4 sides. Don't leave any of the edges open, the overlapped layer is the opening.

Once sewn, flip it right side out. Use a blunt pencil to push out the corners gently.

The backside of the pillow has the overlapped layers for the pillow opening.

Step 5: Pillow Form

Then slip the pillow form inside the velvet pillowcase and it's ready to decorate for the holidays. Add a belt and gold buckle for a Santa Claus finish!
