How to Make Woven Paper Heart Basket Valentine's DIY
The Scandinavian woven heart basket is a traditional paper craft and was a common decoration to hang on the Christmas tree, now we use it for Valentine's day.
Just a couple of pieces of light weight paper is all it takes to make this cute little heart, the bigger the paper, the bigger the woven heart basket.
This woven heart basket craft is great for a last minute Valentine’s day surprise, and I'm sharing a simple paper heart tutorial so you can start your first piece.
Let's get started!
This cute weaving project can be used to hold little treats to deliver to neighbors and friends.
You can make it a larger size by using larger pieces of paper!
I learned how to weave this heart basket in third grade, at about age 8 or 9.
Our entire class used giant pieces of butcher paper to make woven hearts for our Valentine's boxes, they hung off the front of our desks with tape, perfect for filling with handmade Valentine cards.
Here's a video of the process for making and weaving woven heart baskets crafts.
Printable template pattern and step by step instructions follow in the post.
Supplies Needed for Woven Paper Heart:
- 2 Shades of Lightweight Paper (this does not work with cardstock)
- Scissors
Step 1: Cutting the Half Heart Shape
Begin by folding the paper in half, so that the dimensions are 5.5 by 8.5.
You can print this paper pattern on white paper and then use this as the template for the colored paper.
It should be 2.5 inches wide by 5 inches and have rounded corners at the top.

Then cut that shape on the fold line of the colored paper, cutting 2 identical long pink ovals, or the second piece in a contrasting color, whichever paper colors you decide.
The little woven hearts look amazing with different colors or different variations in patterns.
Keep the cut paper pieces folded in half on the folded straight edge.
Step 2: Cut 2 slits in each Heart Half
Now cut 2 long slits in each half heart.
Nearly to the top of the curved edges, just line up the template and cut or just guess.
You can actually cut a variety of widths and get a very different finished effect, so go for it!
Make your weaving have 4, 5, 6 or even 10 sections for weaving together!
Make the lines different shapes by cutting them with decorative scissors!
The weaving process is a little daunting, because the heart container opens up!
Don't fret though, it's really pretty simple once you get the hang of it...so don't give up.
A typical, non 3D weaving, is just over and under.
This is a little more complicated because the strips go around and through.
Creating the 3D basket effect with a colorful weaving on both sides.
Step 3: Weave the Paper Heart
Hold the paper heart halves as pictured below, I'm using the red strip on the right hand side.
Begin with number 3 and push C through the opening of 3.
Then slide 2 through the opening of C.
Then push C through 1.
Then continue weaving 3 through B, B through 2, 1 through B.
Finish off the heart by weaving A through 3, 2 through A and finally A through 1.
I sounds confusing to write out or read, but just cut scrap paper and try it, it's pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
Give it a few tries if it seems complex and you'll get the hang of it!
Then check inside the heart to make sure you did the weaving correctly.
It should open up like a cute little basket, perfect for small treats.
Add a loop with a pink strip of paper or ribbon for a hanging basket or wall decorations DIY as desired.
Fill with treats, handmade gifts bookmarks, hang on a garland, a gift tag, make them out of felt for a more permanent decoration, or make them giant using large pieces of paper!
These cute little baskets would work as a corner bookmark too!
Here's a fun idea:
Make a basket loop with a strip of cardstock big enough to fit over someone's door knob, then you can deliver them as a fun surprise!
Make as many as you want! Experiment with different numbers of weaving strips, or use patterned scissors for the cuts. Have fun!
That's it!
That is the stunning woven paper heart tutorial!
Now that you've given the simple weaving pattern a try for your first piece, you can make more with more paper strips to weave for mor intricate designs.
