How to Make Hairpin Leg Wedding Cake Table from Reclaimed Wood!

For this TALL wedding cake table I selected 4 Hairpin Legs in black, 40" tall. These are the tallest they come and they are impressively tall! I love the height and the sturdiness of the 3-rod legs. For a round table, you could get away with using only 3 legs, you decide!

I love the round reclaimed wood top. We just finished building a fence out of reclaimed wood (my beautiful backdrop), and we have lots of reclaimed wood left over. It was fun to create a little round table top using the same wood as the fence, as a reminder of our labor of love all during the month of May.

The legs could easily be unscrewed and put together on site if the completed table doesn't fit in the vehicle. Perfect for garden or outdoor weddings, giving it that gorgeous rustic feel.

Step 1: Build Reclaimed Wood Tabletop

Begin by gathering reclaimed wood. I used 2x4's, 4x4's, and some fence panels. Then cut each piece of wood about 1 inch bigger than the desired finished length.

My table is 15 inches across, so each board was cut to 16 inches.

We used our miter saw, but a table saw would work just as well.

Step 2: Cut the Boards Height

Now all the boards need to be cut the same height. Set the table saw guide so they are all the same, just under 4 inches tall. Then cut each board the same.

Step 3: Line up the Boards

Now line up the boards in the arrangement you like. Vary the widths of boards next to each other, as well as the color of the wood.

Get the wood clamps and glue ready to rock. Also work on a surface that will not get glued to the project. We used a marble slab.

Step 4: Gluing Boards Together

Spread a generous amount of glue on each of the board edges, then press them together. The glue will seep down into all the little crevices of the board, so it's important to put glue on both sides of the boards before joining them.

After placing the last board on the stack, hold them in place firmly with the c clamps. Then let the glue dry and cure overnight.

Step 5: Sanding and Shaping

After letting the glue dry and cure, it's time to sand and shape it. We used a hand planer to go over the top surface making it all level and smooth.

A grinder or even sand paper will work too.

Then use the grinder with a sanding disk to smooth out any rough glue that dripped through the cracks.

Next, draw a circle on the top of the board. We traced a garden pot because it was the perfect size. A string and pencil could be used like a compass.

The board looks amazing square shaped, but we are taking it to the next level by making it round. If you don't have the technical skills for this, keep yours square and it will still be awesome!

After gluing rows of reclaimed wood boards together, it's time to cut them into a circle. Begin by notching off the corners with the table saw. Then work your way around the board, shaving off little pieces as you go until you have a circle.

Use the grinder to sand down the edges when finished. Watch the sped up video of the process that took about 5 minutes:

Step 6: Hairpin Legs

Now turn the wood table top over and place the hairpin legs on the top of it. Screw the hairpin legs in place.

It's as easy as that!

Now stand up your table and enjoy it!

Step 7: Resin the Top of the Table

To finish off the top of the table, spray the Enfirotex Clear High Gloss resin spray. This will really bring out the varied colors of the wood and make it shine! It takes a project from awesome to ah-mazing!

Just follow the directions and lightly spray the surface. I did 2 coats of resin spray.

Look at how it brings out the bright colors of the reclaimed wood! I love the imperfections, knots and unique parts of the wood.

This cake topper is a cinch to make using the Cricut Maker too! Just create a 1/4" circle and place a word image in the center, then weld the shapes and cut out of posterboard. Then hot glue to a toothpick! Easy and cute!
