How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs!
Hot chocolate is a Winter long favorite. There's nothing as warming and delicious as some hot chocolate on a cold day. Hot chocolate bombs are a chocolate orb filled with cocoa powder, mini marshmallows and other delightful mix-ins.
Just place in a mug and pour a cup of hot milk or water over the top of it and watch the chocolate shell melt, releasing the powder and goodies. Learn how to make hot chocolate bombs for the perfect dessert or a great handmade gift.
These hot chocolate bombs are big, but perfect for a big mug of hot choccy. The creamy chocolate melts right into the drink for the perfect addition of chocolate.
Get creative with your hot chocolate bombs by adding flavored hot cocoa powders--like dark chocolate, caramel or vanilla, then add all kinds of candy bits, mints or candy canes, cayenne powder, cinnamon, or toffee pieces! There's so many options once you get started.
Let's start with the basic hot chocolate bombs.
Ingredients Needed for Hot Chocolate Bombs:
Hot Chocolate Powder
Chocolate Candy Melts
Dehydrated Miniature Marshmallows (you can use mini marshmallows, but I love these little dehydrated ones!)
Silicone Molds (These are the exact ones I used, they are 3.14 inches across)
Basting Brush
Other mix-ins (optional)
Gloves
Electric Skillet
Step 1: Hot Chocolate Bomb Shells
Begin by melting the chocolate candy melts according to the package directions. Then plop a spoonful in each cavity of the mold and use the basting brush to spread it around as evenly as possible.
Repeat the chocolate spreading process for each of the cavities in the mold.
Then turn them upside down on a wax paper lined baking sheet and place them in the freezer for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Hot Chocolate Bomb Shells Part 2
After the chocolate bomb shells have been in the freezer for 5 minutes, remove them and give each shell a second coating of chocolate.
This is important because there is a great deal of unevenness and the bombs will fall apart if not substantially strong.
Then place them back in the freezer for 5 minutes.
Step 3: Pop Out Bomb Shells
Now that the chocolate is hardened, pop the shells out of the mold. Don't touch the chocolate with your fingers or it will leave fingerprints. Wear gloves.
Now set your electric skillet to the lowest setting. Wear gloves and place the chocolate dome on the skillet for just a few seconds to melt the rough edges. Then set it back on the baking sheet.
Step 5: Fill the Hot Chocolate Bomb
Now scoop out 1/4 cup of hot chocolate powder and pour it into the half dome. It will nearly fill the entire thing!
Top the hot chocolate powder with mini marshmallows and other various mix-ins.
Top the hot chocolate powder with mini marshmallows and other various mix-ins.
Step 6: Top off the Hot Chocolate Bomb
Now melt another half dome slightly on the skillet and then immediately place it right on top of the lower filled half. The chocolate should be soft enough to weld them together. If not, just wipe some chocolate around the junction with a knife or the back of a spoon.
Step 7: Decorate the Hot Chocolate Bombs
Finally top off the hot chocolate bombs with some streaks of chocolate and sprinkles. The topping could be the way you tell your different flavors apart too!
They fit really cute in a cupcake paper and then can be wrapped with cellophane for the perfect handmade gift or a fun treat to leave out for Santa to enjoy!
Also, these would be great to make in January.
January is a very bleak and dreary time of year for so many people...a hot chocolate bomb might make a cold, gray January day a little brighter and more cheery.
Making these Hot Chocolate Bombs is kind of a labor of love. I would not want to make these in a bulk order, but doing 12 of them was fun.
They are pretty to look at and taste delicious! Perfect thing for a snowy Winter's day.
That's it!
Merry Christmas eve! Hope you have a delightful weekend!
