How to Make Harry Potter Cake Topper with Cricut!
Hi friends! I'm super excited about this Harry Potter Cake Topper post, mostly because it meant I got to have a Harry Potter birthday party over the weekend and eat lots of cake--like an unholy amount of delicious cake!
This Harry Potter cake topper is the perfect crowning piece for the ultimate geek inspired birthday party. The Harry Potter universe is full of symbols, familiars and characters. That made making this happy birthday Harry Potter cake topper a cinch!
You can make this too using my pattern and a Cricut Machine!
Set the scene for the perfect Harry Potter birthday party by gathering anything you've got that is Harry Potter themed. You can even hang a sweatshirt or hoodie as a backdrop. I've got a Harry Potter Funko Pop figurine, glasses, Luna Lovegood's glasses, a generic scarf (that is not actually the right colors).
Once you've source actual merchandise, look around for anything vintage...frames, mirrors, candelabras, bird cage, owls, candle holders, etc.
Then find anything gold; banners, buntings, glitter paper, etc.
Finally a letterboard or cinema marquee sign is the perfect way to drive the theme home.
The ultimate party food, cake, is a must! I hired out my cakes this time and it was so nice! I had 2 (professional cake making) friends make me 3 cakes. Best decision ever. Of course, you can make a box cake mix, cookies, brownies or cupcakes and stick this Harry Potter cake topper inside for the perfect finishing touch.
The peanut butter chocolate layered cake was perfect for my cake topper. Then I had another friend make me the very iconic Hagrid's cake for Harry and a sheet cake that looks like the Book of Monsters. Cake for days!
Okay, let's get started on this awesome Harry Potter Cake Topper. The gold glitter paper gives it the classy touch that needs nothing else to adorn it. But, I added a few chocolate frogs too!
The topper does use the Harry Potter font to say Happy Birthday, filled with symbols and icons from the series. I realize that Harry Potter's birthday is July 31st...
But let me tell you that I'll be celebrating Harry Potter Day next week on May 2nd in happy birthday style! Mostly because of that Golden Snitch. I love it!
Supplies for Harry Potter Cake Topper:
Step 1: Black Cardstock
Begin by opening up the project I designed in Cricut Design Space. Then click to "make it". Load the black cardstock on the mat or if you are using the Cricut Maker 3, you have the option of doing it without the mat.
Then cut the black cardstock outline.
Step 2: Gold Glitter Cardstock
Next, as your Cricut machine prompts, remove the black cardstock and load the glitter cardstock on the mat. Cut it out with the Cricut machine with the cutting depth set for glitter cardstock.
Then remove the mat, weed the excess pieces of cardstock from the delicate images. The image is not all one piece, they are made to glue onto the black background, so they will come apart in a few pieces.
Step 3: Hot Glue Harry Potter Cake Topper
Step 4: Finishing Touches for Harry Potter Cake Topper
After finishing the gluing, there may be some hot glue strings stretched around the top.
**Pro Tip: Use a heat embossing tool, heat gun or a hot blow dryer to heat them up slightly and they will just disappear! Careful to not overheat the paper and start a fire**
Then hot glue a paper straw onto the back side of the cake topper.
See the dimension? I love it! Take some time to curl those little Golden Snitch wings out a bit for added splendor!
Now you are ready for the ultimate Harry Potter themed birthday party!
Have your very talented cake decorator friends make you the perfect cakes--or whip something up yourself. Brownies with frosting and little eye candies would be great too.
Let me tell you though, that monster cake was really yummy!
Just stick that Harry Potter cake topper right into the cake and you are ready to rock. Harry Potter day is on Monday May 2nd, so you might not want to host a giant birthday party...but just adding this cake topper into your dessert (or sandwich, stack of pancakes, or just tucked in a vase) can make your day a little bit brighter!
I've been feeling really heavy with the news of the world rocking in commotion. It's hard to have a jovial attitude when you see so much suffering. But, my old friend Ron Weasley gave some great advice to Harry once:
"So… you’re gonna suffer, but you’re gonna be happy about it."
So eat the cake, celebrate a random Monday, bring a smile to others. Enjoy the days you have, live life to the fullest. Share the light with those closest to you. Celebrate Harry Potter day with a Happy Birthday cake topper!
“Being different isn’t a bad thing. It means that you are brave enough to be yourself.” --Luna Lovegood
When I was planning this party, I really wanted the Hagrid cake...but I didn't want the Harry Potter cake topper to be in the Hagrid birthday cake.
So I had my friend make me a small 4" wide cake as the perfect little decoration piece for the party. It was absolutely perfect!
So that's how I threw this fun Harry Potter party together for our weekend fun. We celebrated with seeing Fantastic Beasts Secrets of Dumbledore and eating lots of cake.
That layered chocolate cake with creamy peanut butter buttercream frosting and dark chocolate ganache drip...so good!
Alright, if you aren't comfortable celebrating a birthday party on an unbirthday...then save this off so you can make one for the next available birthday in your life.
Make this for a Potter loving friend and give them the best birthday of their whole year with this Harry Potter cake topper!
What part of this party do you like the most? Which cake do you want a piece of?
