This Downton Abbey party is a collection of fun things to look at and fun things to eat.
It's set up very elegantly to pay tribute to the 6 seasons of the show!
Have a few well-dressed friends over for some cake, macarons and maybe even some tea.
**Off Topic: Have you watched Bridgerton? I've heard it's a good one if you like Downton, but I haven't wanted to start a new show for a while...so...what do you think?
I'm guessing some of the ideas here could be used for a Bridgerton or Regency theme party or wedding as well. Like this fabulous stenciled cake--check out the full tutorial here.
Supplies Needed to Throw a Downton Abbey Party:
- Cake--preferably an Art Deco Stenciled Cake (make your own!)
- Palm Leaf Cake Toppers (make your own!)
- Crepe Paper Flowers (make your own!)
- Teacup Cupcakes
- Macarons
- A collection of white dishes, cake stands, teacups, etc.
- White vintage frames
- A collection of vintage or vintage-like items: crowns, gloves, calligraphy, evening bags, candles, flowers, brooches, pearls, other jewelry, old books, etc.
How to make Cupcakes in Teacups!
These darling and very posh cupcakes are perfect for a Downton Abbey themed party.
These ideas work great for any period drama theme...Bridgerton, Pride & Prejudice, Lark Rise to Candleford, Little Women, Great Expectations, Poldark, Jane Eyre, or even Alice in Wonderland!
Step 1: Teacups
Step 2: Bake the Cupcakes in the Tea Cups!
Mix up a cake mix, but use melted butter instead of oil.
Then fill the tea cups half full. Place the teacups on a baking tray and put them in a preheated oven.
Bake them in the oven until a toothpick comes out clean.
Step 3: Frosting!
After letting the cupcakes in the tea cups cool down completely, they are ready for frosting.
Fill a piping bag with buttercream frosting. You can make it yourself or use store bought frosting. Spoon frosting into the piping bag.
If you want mixed colors, just spoon blue on one side of the bag and white on the other side of the bag.
I'm using a big piping tip too!
Oh, I love these rose gold sprinkles!
Squeeze the bag gently, but also firmly...but not tight enough to make the bag burst.
Then start in the center of the cupcake and squeeze a consistent swirl of frosting around the top of the cupcake.
Add little dollops if desired too!
Then add some sprinkles in one little section of the cupcake. Strategically place the big sprinkles to make it look cute and appealing.
Aren't they just the cutest!?
Tea cup cupcakes are bigger than a typical cupcake, like twice as much cake.
The cupcakes are the perfect dessert and the perfect decoration!
Use some of the same frosting and darling little sprinkles and add a little flair to the store-bought macarons.
I found these in the frozen dessert section of my local grocery store.
They are pretty yummy and a miniature size, so they are a great little finger food treat.
Are you a Downton Abbey fan? Who is your favorite character--or who do you think you are the most like?
I love Anna. She's a star through every season. Always into some kind of drama that wasn't created by her directly. Her story is a rollercoaster ride for sure.
It's easy to love Sybil and Tom...and of course Matthew. I love Mrs. Pattmore, she's a breath of humor and fun.
Mr. Molesly makes me laugh, especially in the last movie, with that odd speech and curtsey to the Queen.
Thomas was a trouble maker at first, but I was glad to see dynamic characters making changes along the way.
Who do you relate with?
Okay, let's talk about some of this fabulous decor. I literally just shopped my house.
Gather any fun dishes or fancy china plates you have. Grab cakestands or make some using vases and plates. Gather any flowers you have.
I have tons of cake stands, dishes and frames--but I only picked out the white ones for this party.
Find anything that is rose gold, gold, silver or metallic.
Get the tea service, tea pots, tea cups, cream pitchers, sugar bowls, you name it!
Go through your jewelry and find anything that is period looking...long pearls, brooches, crowns, tiaras.
I always have several tiaras on hand!
Candlesticks, candelabra, gloves, calligraphy pens, knick-knacks, etc.
Then lay it out on a tea cart, perfect for a party set up!
See this blue beaded handbag?
It was something I inherited from my mom when she passed. I didn't know anything about it because she died when I was 16.
I asked a few of my aunts about it recently as I prepared for this party.
I was told that it was from my great grandma's evening bag collection from the 1930's. It is exquisite! It is all hand beaded with little swags of beads. The lining is even hand stitched inside the bag.
It's vintage--totally fits the time frame of the Downton Abbey movie too!
I believe the cameo brooches are from her as well.
I got the stack of old books from the neighbors when they cleaned out their grandma's house. I borrowed my friend's long white gloves that she wore for prom 20 years ago.
The frames are just modern made to look vintage but I love how all the white works together for this fun 1920's tea party.
Let's talk about this tiered stenciled cake now!
Step 1: Stencil a Cake
All the details on making a reusable stencil for a cake at this post.
Step 2: Pearl Sprinkles on a Tiered Cake
After the cake has been stenciled, add some pearl sprinkles on the cake sporadically but balanced.
Add a bunch of sprinkles around the layers of the cake too.
Step 3: Cake Topper
Is it still called a cake "topper" if it goes in the side? I say yes--I mean it's "topping" off the cake, right?
Make some paper palm leaf picks with metallic paper and stick them right into the cake!
All the details on making these paper palm leaves at this post.
Then use fresh flowers or make a crepe paper flower to stick right in the center of the palm leaves.
This creates the perfect 1920's vibe, like a flapper's headband!
Finish off the cake by putting a few decorated macarons right on top.
Perfect for your regency themed wedding!
Then cut into that cake and share it with friends!
This gorgeous cake was incredibly delicious. The top tier is biscoff cake with biscoff filling. The bottom tier is vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting.
So yummy!
I love how this party set up came together. I love the softness of the whites and the boldness of the aqua! I styled this party after the Downton Abbey Movie Trailer poster:
The movie stars dress, white muff...Lady Mary and Lady Edith's clothes...all aqua and white. Lots of creams, beiges and rose golds.
I love 1920's cosplay too! Check out this post for painting your own wingtip shoes!
That's it!
