How to Make a Resin Birthday Cake Topper in Minutes!
Resin Crafts are a favorite of mine. They take a project and amp up the coolness! It's basically the "icing on the cake" to have a fabulous cake topper. Cake toppers are my favorite birthday element, and this one is quick casting resin!
Learn how easy and quick it is to make a Resin Birthday Cake Topper in just a few minutes!
I shared this post on Resin Crafts Blog back in April and I'm just getting around to posting it here.
Last January I celebrated my 41st birthday in style! I picked gold, black and white as the colors and filled a wall with balloons!
I used this backdrop for a few other posts too--so it might look familiar!

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR RESIN CAKE TOPPER:
- FastCast Urethane Casting Resin
- Mixing Cups, Stirring Sticks and Disposable Gloves
- Happy Birthday Number Mold/Letter Mold
- Bakers Twine
- 2 Paper Straws
- Hot Glue/Gun
STEP 1 FOR RESIN CAKE TOPPER: FASTCAST RESIN
Begin by reading the directions for FastCast Resin. Have everything ready to use; this resin sets so fast you have no time to delay.
Set your mold on a level surface. Have 2 mixing cups and 2 stirring sticks ready to use.
Put on your gloves and have a clock or timer close…or use a voice activated device to keep track of your time.
STEP 2: MIX FASTCAST RESIN
STEP 3: POUR RESIN INTO MOLD
As soon as the 30 seconds is up, pour carefully into the mold. Just pour the resin into the letters or numbers that you intend to use for your cake topper.
As pictured, it can be a little tricky to get just the right amount of resin in each shape, but I’ll show you how to easily fix that next.
STEP 4: WAIT 15 MINUTES
Once the resin has been poured, it just needs about 15 minutes to set. Just sit back and relax.
It’s actually super fun to watch the hardening process.
The resin will turn from clear to white.
I love that FastCast dries opaque white.
STEP 5: REMOVE RESIN FROM MOLD
Removing resin from a mold is one of the most satisfying moments of resin crafting. There is something so rewarding about it.
This is just about instant gratification because the resin hardens so quickly. After waiting 15 minutes remove all the letters and shapes from the mold.
STEP 6 FOR RESIN CAKE TOPPER: TRIMMING THE RESIN LETTERS
Now that the letters are removed from the mold, they are still a bit warm and soft.
Use a pair of small scissors to trim up any of the overfilled edges of resin.
The FastCast resin cuts pretty easily.
You can use a drill and bit to open up holes in the letters if desired, but I went with the filled in look.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I did a few shapes and decided I really liked the Asterix stars.
STEP 7: ASSEMBLE THE CAKE TOPPER
To make the cake topper, simply cut a piece of bakers twine about 6-8 inches long (depending on the width of your cake) to the top of the paper straws.
Tie a second, slightly longer piece of twine under the first twine on the straws.
This will create a second layer to the cake topper that hangs slightly lower than the top.
Next, heat up the hot glue gun and lay the letters out on the twine so they are ready to glue in place.
I replaced the I in birthday with a star for fun. Hot glue all the letters on the twine and the resin cake topper is ready to stick in the cake.
The resin letters are heavy enough to hang down pretty nicely and make the perfect statement on a fancy birthday cake.
STEP 8: INSERT CAKE TOPPER INTO CAKE
Now the cake topper is the star of the show, on your fantastic cake!
Add a few candles and sing a song or two.
Your party guests will love the creativity put into this cake topper that is unique, handmade and only takes 25 minutes to put together.
Add some balloons if desired, but really, we all know that cake is the star of the show.
This easy resin cake topper is a great way to add a custom saying, age number or even an inside joke to the cake in a very professional looking way.
THAT’S IT!
The resin cake topper can be use over and over. Just replace the paper straws after they’ve been in the cake. Change the colors of straws to make it look unique for every birthday.
This is the perfect birthday party DIY that keeps on giving.
Have you used FastCast Resin before? You’ll love it and how fast it sets!
