Native American Culture!

Dreamcatchers are common in many tribes in Native American culture.

Dreamcatchers are believed to catch bad dreams in the web and let good dreams pass through into your sleep.

Ideally a dreamcatcher is a combination of natural materials, to give it a very earthy energy.

Every Native American tribe has some differences on the symbolism of the dreamcatcher, but I don't know all the nuances, so I'm just making something beautiful, natural and fun.

Dreamcatchers are easy to make and highly addictive! I mean, I sat down to make one dreamcatcher and look at how many I made!

Supplies Needed to Make a Dreamcatcher:

Supplies Needed to Make a Dreamcatcher: Metal Ring (mine is 6 inches) Leather Lace (or yarn, cord, fabric strips, etc) Cotton Thread Wooden Beads Feathers Hot Glue/Gun Paper/Pen

Step 1: Wrap Metal Ring

Begin by wrapping the ring in the leather cord. Use a dot of hot glue to hold the leather in place as you start wrapping.

Add a little dot of hot glue periodically while wrapping so it stays tight and doesn't unravel.

Finish off wrapping the metal ring with leather by cutting the leather and hot gluing it right next to where it began.

The perfect near "seamless" wrapping.

Step 2: Web Weaving!

Now begins the weaving of the web. It's much easier to have a piece of paper and a pen to make the perfect guidelines for symmetry.

Decide how many "points" your desired dreamcatcher has. I picked 8.

I'm under the belief that the different spoke numbers symbolize different things in Native American culture, but I don't know all the symbolism.

Lay the ring on the paper and add dots where you want the string to wrap around the edges, this will help you stay symmetrical as you weave.

Start by tying a piece of cotton thread on the first dot location.

Then lay the thread over to the next point and wrap the thread around the metal ring just one time and then repeat to the next dot.

Repeat the looping until you've made it all around the metal ring with the thread.

Then continue the same simple looping process and loop the thread around the center of the thread section.

Repeat this simple looping process until the entire dreamcatcher web is filled with nightmare capturing webs.

When you arrive at the center of the web, simply tie off the end of the thread on a thread close to it.

That's all the weaving! Once you get the hang of it, you can add small beads, crystals or charms on the web as you go.

Step 3: Decorating the Dreamcatcher!

Now you can add any type of decorations you desire--feathers, beads, charms, crystals, tassels, etc.!

Tie a loop on the top of the dreamcatcher for easy hanging on the wall.

Use more of the cotton thread to tie some wooden beads onto the dreamcatcher.

Now get creative! Make a variety of sizes or tie a few different sizes together in a hanging row.

I love the natural leather, the turquoise color, the wooden beads, and feathers!

These 2 gorgeous feathers were in my collection of feathers I found in the wild.

If that gives you the gross-outs, just buy some sanitized ones.

I used to collect feathers when I was a kid. I wonder what I did with that collection, it clearly did not survive all the moves.

This dreamcatcher was made with just a little 2 inch ring and it's so cute.

It would be great to hang on the rear view mirror in the car too--you know, so you have good dreams when you're driving...lol, just because it's cute.
