How to Make Hand Lettering Cake Toppers!
Make your own intricate cake toppers with your own hand lettering!
Hand lettering is such a fun hobby, art style, personal expression.
I've been hand lettering for 8 years now and absolutely love it.
You will almost always find me hand lettering something--even if I'm just "air writing" with my fingers.
Learn how to turn your hand lettering into a beautiful cake topper for any occasion!
Digitize Hand Lettering:
To make your own hand lettering cake topper you will need to digitize your hand lettering.
Write out the desired statement. You can use anything you can think of.
Make sure to attach letters together, like the dot of the i or the cross of the t.
Then take a picture of it and upload it into Cricut Design Space and remove the background to prepare it for cutting.
Scale the width of the cake topper based on the size of your cake.
The top of this cake is 4", so the cake toppers are scaled to no bigger than 6" wide.
Supplies Needed for Hand Lettering Cake Toppers:
- Hand Lettering Digitized (Or use My Cricut Design Space Project here!)
- Gold Posterboard or Thick Cardstock
- White Cardstock (this 110 lb. cardstock is dreamy)
- Wooden Skewers or Dowels
- Hot Glue/Gun

Step 1: Cricut Maker
Begin by having the Cricut machine cut the cake topper hand lettering out of the gold posterboard. It may take a couple passes to get a clean cut through, so make sure it is all the way cut before removing the mat.
Step 2: White Cardstock
Step 3: Remove from Mat
Now remove all the cut images from the mat.
You might not be making all four of these cake toppers! If not, just remove them from the Cricut Design Space project by customizing the project and removing the unwanted texts.
There will be a metallic and white cut out of each desired hand lettering phrase.
Step 4: Hot Glue
Now Hot Glue the white cardstock with a little bead of hot glue. Work quickly, but carefully, so you can adhere the papers before the hot glue sets up.
The hot glue will add fun dimension to the project and give it almost a "foam core" feel.
Step 5: Skewers
Now turn the hand lettering over and hot glue a wooden skewer to the back of the cake topper.
Find the best placement for the stick where the lettering is mostly vertical--this will help it be the most sturdy.
If it feels too flimsy, put 2 skewers on it, angled in on both sides.
That's all I did!
**If you want a more polished, finished look, reverse the images and cut them out of the metallic posterboard again and hot glue it over the backside and the skewer.
This way it will sparkle from every direction.
These hand lettering cake toppers are ready to use for all the parties, celebrations, events and reasons to rejoice!
Happy Birthday!
These cake toppers can be cleaned and saved for every birthday party of the year.
See how the little dot on the i attaches to the r in birthday? The Happy attaches to every part of the birthday as well.
This will keep it connected and readable when it becomes a cut out.
Ready to Party!
The Cricut Maker 3 or Cricut Maker are awesome machines. They have the capability to cut chipboard and basswood too with the knife blade.
Sturdier materials (like basswood, balsa or chipboard) would make gorgeous wedding cake toppers, they could be painted and stained, and last much longer than posterboard.
Celebrate!
I love celebrating little moments. This would be a great cake topper for any day of the week!
