How to Make Watercolor Cards with Cricut!
Learn how to easily make two different types of watercolor cards using Cricut.
Cricut has watercolor cards, watercolor markers and a 2x2 card mat for the Cricut Maker and it makes card making a breeze!
Here's how to make watercolor cards two ways:
You can use the watercolor markers a couple ways.
They are made to click right into the pen slot (A) of the Cricut Machine, I'm using a Maker 3.
They work with any design from Cricut Design Space that is a "draw" image.
Or you can use the Cricut Watercolor Markers to make beautiful backgrounds and then add designs over it in permanent markers!
Which style of Cricut Watercolor cards do you like best?
Supplies Needed for Cricut Watercolor Cards:
- Cricut Machine
- Cricut Watercolor Cards
- Cricut Watercolor Markers
- Cricut 4 Card Mat (2x2)
- Cricut Design Space
- Cricut Permanent Marker (I'm using the biggest ones and I love them!)
I'm using these awesome flower bouquet designs and these line art mushrooms.
Create watercolor cards with Cricut--Part 1
Did you know Cricut has watercolor cards, a 4-slot card mat and watercolor markers?
Beautiful watercolor cards have never been easier.
1. Simply pick a "draw" design in Cricut Design Space.
2. Insert the watercolor marker in the Cricut A slot and click go.
3. Change the marker color as directed.
4. Use the water brush to blend the marker color.
5. Let dry, remove from card mat and enjoy!
Let me break it down!
Step 1: Cricut Design Space
Begin by picking a design on Cricut Design Space.
Find a design that is a "draw" option.
Then alter the colors in CDS to the colors of markers you have.
Click "make it".
Then select the "On Card Mat" in the Mat drop down menu.
Cricut has taken all the guess work out of this process.
Just select watercolor cards as the medium.
Then click go.
Then Cricut Design Space automatically centers your images on the mat.
If you are having issues with this step, go back to the images and make sure all the parts are linked as one image...not welded, but combined.
Step 2: Draw!
Then peel the cover sheet off the card mat, revealing the sticky/tacky surface.
Slip the back page of the card under the sticky part and lay it over and secure the top part of the card on the sticky surface.
Insert the mat into the Cricut.
It will then instruct you as to which color of marker to slip into the pen slot (A) of the machine.
Then the machine will draw all the parts with the marker color selected.
When it is finished, it will ask you to remove the marker and insert the next color.
Then click the "play" button again.
Do not eject the mat during this process.
*Note: This drawing process for 4 cards took my machine 20 minutes.*
Step 3: Water!
After the marker drawing process is complete, remove the card mat from the machine.
I keep the cards on the mat while watering, because it keeps them more flat during the drying process instead of curling up on the corners.
Take out the water brush included with the markers, open it up and fill it with water, rinse the bristles out in water so they are nice and soft.
The water brush will release a little water into the bristles, keeping a steady and even flow of moisture...but it should not puddle or drip.
You do not need to squeeze the water brush.
Simply paint inside all the drawn lines.
I pick a color and paint all the parts that color before moving on to the next marker color.
I love how the color blends and bleeds, creating light and dark spots, indicative of watercolors.
In my opinion, this is better than coloring books.
I love watercolors so much.
The fluidity is so relaxing.
You will be hooked!
Step 4: Dry
Then let the cards dry completely on the mat, it doesn't take long.
Then gently peel the mat from the cards!
They are ready to write in and send.
These would be gorgeous handmade holiday or Christmas cards too!
Create watercolor cards with Cricut--Part 2
Here's the next variety of watercolor cards, this time using the watercolor markers as the background to the card.
You'll need the supplies listed above as well as a plastic baggie and a spray bottle.
Step 1: Watercolor Marker
Scribble with the Cricut Watercolor Markers on one side of a plastic baggie.
Then gently spritz the front flap of a watercolor card with the spray bottle.
Step 2: Colors on Water
Immediately after spraying card, turn the baggie over and press the marker scribbles onto the watercolor card.
Then remove the bag and wipe it off with a cloth, napkin or baby wipe and repeat!
Let the cards dry completely.
Step 3: Cricut Drawing
After the watercolor backgrounds are dry on the watercolor cards, put them into the Cricut card mat.
Insert the Cricut Marker into the pen slot (A) on the Cricut Maker and pick a design for it to draw on your cards.
After the drawing process is done, remove the cards from the mat!
They are ready to write inside and mail to a friend!
I love the tie-dye hippie vibes these mushroom cards are giving off!
Which Cricut Watercolor Card technique do you like best?
Do you like the line art drawn with watercolor markers and filled in with the water brush...or do you prefer the watercolor background art with marker over the top?
That's it!
It's so easy to make watercolor cards two different ways using the Cricut tools.
I love the versatility of my Cricut Maker 3 and all the different attachments and tools I can use with just one simple-to-use machine!
Give it a try and make some watercolor cards!
These would be great to give you a head-start on the holiday rush!
