Last Minute Green M&M Costume DIY
Need a last minute Halloween costume idea?
M&M's are the easiest costume to make.
Just five minutes will have the costume put together...make a whole bag of M&M's as a group costume too!
R.I.P. Sexy Green M&M.
Did you know M&M's redesigned their icons because the green M was too sexy...and had boots with heels?
This simple, easy, last minute, DIY costume is the perfect way to show support to Green--just grab your white heeled Go-Go boots and you've got this!
Supplies Needed for M&M Costume:
- Colored Tee Shirt
- White Acrylic Craft Paint (I use Plaid--use code: DOODLECRAFT15 for 15% off purchases)
- Freezer Paper
- Cricut Cutting Machine
- Stencil Paint Brush
- HTVRont Mini Heat Press
Step 1: Freezer Paper
Cut some freezer paper to fit on the Cricut Mat.
If you don't have a Cricut, you can still use freezer paper and just cut the image out with a hobby knife or scissors.
Place the shiny side of the freezer paper down on the Cricut cutting mat.
Step 2: Cricut
Have the Cricut cut an M.
I just googled M&M's logo and picked a single M to import into Cricut Design Space.
Set the materials to 'freezer paper' and have the Cricut cut it out.
After cutting, discard the actual "M" and keep the outline as a stencil.
Step 3: Iron On
Now heat up the HTVRont Mini Heat Press or even a household iron works for freezer paper.
There's a shiny, waxy side to the freezer paper that forms a seal when heated up.
It's the perfect temporary stencil for shirt making.
Slide some cardboard in the shirt to prevent the paint from bleeding through to the backside.
Place the freezer paper on the shirt, so the M is centered a couple inches below the collar.
Then iron the freezer paper in place, making sure to get the edges pressed down firmly.
Step 4: Paint!
Now use the acrylic craft paint and stencil brush and fill in the M.
It does not need to be bright white.
Look at the opacity of an actual M&M, they aren't super white...so this is perfect, plus it will keep the shirt soft and not all stiff from paint.
The paint soaks into the shirt pretty fast, so it uses a surprising amount of paint!
Make sure to stencil straight down, especially on the borders, instead of brushing your brush side to side...as this can push paint under the stencil.
After the M is completely filled, and while the paint is still wet, remove the freezer paper and discard it.
Then lift the shirt up from the cardboard so it doesn't stick to it while drying.
Then let the shirt dry completely...this only took about 5 extra minutes for me...but if you are in a real hurry, use a blow dryer to speed things up.
Then it's ready to wear!
I added a pink flower...because of my favorite LIMITED EDITION M&M's ever. Coconut.
Look how cute Green is, with her flower and boots.
Check out this post for what I did with this packaging.
You could pair this shirt with fish nets or make a dress instead of a shirt!
There are so many options and stenciling the M is so easy!
That's it!
A green shirt, freezer paper, paint and brush, Cricut and heat press are all that's needed to make the perfect last minute M&M Halloween Costume!
Make a couples costume or a big group costume with everyone wearing different colored shirts.
Just add the right white shoes, maybe some white gloves, accessories if you want them and you're set!
