These snowflake (ish) name ornaments are so much fun!

I'm usually a stickler for the 6 sided snowflake form...but the ipad has an option for an 8 sided mirrored or lined up image and it's so much fun to use.

I lettered all the names I could think of, until my hand absolutely ached.

I wrote out all the names of my kids, my husband and myself.

I used my laser cutter to cut the name snowflakes out of 3mm basswood--which turned out to be MUCH TOO FRAGILE...so keep reading!

These snowflake name or monogram ornaments are easy to laser cut out of cardboard!

The cardboard is flexible, so the little pieces don't break off, plus, free.

Also, these files can be imported into Cricut Design Space and cut out of paper or even vinyl--then adhered to things!

So many options with these fun snowflake name files!

  • Name or Monogram Snowflake Files (FREE AT END OF POST)

Step 1: Snowflake Name Import

I'm showing how to do this in xTool Creative Space (XCS) because I use an xTool laser cutting machine.

These files can be used in other programs, as they are just PNG files.

Cut them from paper, vinyl, wood, acrylic or cardboard!

In XCS import the file.

Select the offset distance as 0.

Then delete the imported file and keep the blue outline.

Step 2: Cut

Set the image to cut and select the type of material.

I love using cardboard for this...3.5mm corrugated paper, power 75 and speed 10.

Then have your beautiful xTool cut it out.

This can also be done on a Cricut, cutting cardstock, stickers or vinyl.

Step 3: Ribbon or Twine

Add a piece of ribbon or twine to the snowflake name ornaments for easy hanging.

Okay, note: This is where I broke some delicate pieces off the basswood.

After this I realized that cardboard would be much better--cheaper, flexible and can easily be painted or covered in glitter!

I did simple bakers twine to hang the name snowflakes because the snowflakes are the focal point here...a big bow or ribbon would possibly detract.

These name snowflakes would also be awesome for stocking tags or gift tags--the perfect way to let them know the gift is for them!

I haven't showcased the monogram snowflakes, but they are free at the end of this post.

I love how each name turns out differently, but there's always the perfect place to hang some twine on it to hang on the tree.

The basswood is very delicate.

I managed to break pieces off of 2 of the name snowflakes.

I just repaired them with some super glue, but they will likely all be dashed to pieces at some point...one drop off the tree...one mishap with my fumbling old hands...or a child reaching for it in excitement.

If you are making these for long term love, use acrylic, chipboard, cardboard or vinyl that you apply on a background paper.

Then they will last forever.

If you have an ipad pro, there's an easy way to make these fun designs on your own.

Using Procreate App Here's what you do:

Open a new canvas (square works best).

Select the Tool icon on the top left.

Then select "Drawing Guides".

In the Guide Options, select 'Radial'.

Make sure that 'Rotational Symmetry' and 'Assisted Drawing' are both turned on.

Then click Done.

Draw on your canvas and see it appear 8X's.

Write until you have a hand cramp.

Here's some snowflake names I did cutting cardboard.

I love the way the corrugated cardboard works--it's flexible and easy to paint or glitter when it's done.

Even with the corrugation, and the front and back don't stick together, it still works really well.

I love that I can take old boxes on their way to the recycling and use them for fun crafts...it makes it a great way to practice using the laser cutter without wasting expensive materials.

If you are thinking about getting a laser cutter, this is your sign.

I've had a laser cutter (starting with the xTool M1 and now the S1) for almost a year!

I started creating with my laser cutter last March and absolutely love it.

I love the fine detail I can cut and create.

I love using my own files, handwriting and art to create custom things.

If you aren't sure which type of laser cutter you should get, check out this post.
