If you are planning a Harry Potter themed wedding, event, birthday party or special occasions, this Deathly Hallows cake topper is the icing on the cake.
I'm sharing these 2 different cake toppers, free downloads at the end of the post, as an inexpensive way to do cake decorations with a high quality professional look.
A magical wedding needs all the subtle Harry Potter touches to add magic with the elegance.
I love how simple this wedding cake is, it's a 6 inch cake with white buttercream frosting and stenciled in white.

- Cake (mine is from Something Special Custom Cakes --she makes gluten free cakes too)
- 3mm Basswood
- xTool S1 Laser Cutting Machine
- Gold Spray Paint
- Gold Glitterific Paint
- Deathly Hallows Sign files (FREE download at end of post)
If you have an xTool P2 (or CO2 laser) you can use different acrylic sheet colors (even fluorescent options) to make the cake topper.
Step 1: Laser Cutting
I love my xTool S1, it makes making high quality elements so quick, easy and inexpensively--better than a retail store. The 20W laser head is awesome for beginner and a great value.
If you don't have a laser cutting machine yet, the files at the end of the post are also perfect for the Cricut, and you can make them out of layers of cardstock and attach a wooden dowel.
If you have a laser cutting machine, place a single sheet of 3mm basswood on the honeycomb riser and secure it down with the magnetic clamps.
Upload the design in the XCS software and select the "outline" set at 0 to get a perfect cut out shape of the Deathly Hallows cake toppers.
Decide which one you like the best and laser cut out just that one or cut them both out and then decide.
Just the standard basswood settings is the perfect cut for it...but check before removing it in case it needs to have another pass.
Sometimes the glue in the wood makes the cut uneven.
I love how beautifully the laser cutter can cut these intricate designs.
Remove the cut out basswood from the tray and clean up the debris all over the honeycomb.
Then wipe the edges of the basswood off with a baby wipe and this will remove any ash dust from lasering.
At this point, these cake toppers are ready to be placed in the top of freshly iced cake...if you love the natural look.
If not, let's continue.
Which of these two Deathly Hallows cake topper design do you like best?
Do you like the simple deathly hallows and the "always" or the deathly hallows and flower spray?
I honestly cannot decide my favorite of the potter cake topper template.
Step 2: Paint
I decided to paint both of these cake toppers because I want the elements of the wedding to be white and gold.
I used gold spray paint and set these on cardboard, taped off the stems of the cake topper, and sprayed them lightly a few times to get a smooth look.
On the always topper, I painted it with gold Glitterific Paint after the spray paint dried.
I really like the glittery one best...but think I like the flower spray design better!
So, play around and decide what you like the best!
Use the background colors for the event you are planning to make the perfect cake topper.
Step 3: Flowers
I used fresh flowers on this cake for added elegance.
You won't want to just stick fresh flowers into the cake, then the stem juices and chlorophyl will seep into the cake.
Instead, here's a trick:
- Clip off the stem close to the base of the flower, leaving a measurement of the stems of about a quarter inch.
- Then insert a toothpick into the base of the flower.
- This way the toothpick easily slides into the cake and the flower just looks absolutely amazing!
I loved being able to use these gorgeous peonies from the yard for this cake.
Depending on the time of year and what's in season, it's easy to use what you have to make your special event beautiful and more memorable.
Which topper and placement do you like best???

Any arrangement and either of the cake toppers is the perfect look for a Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger wedding!
The cake toppers can be used more than once with a little hand wash with warm water on the stem, and saved in a plastic bag for the future.
The perfect Potter topper love!
A great way to display the wedding cake is a gorgeous hairpin leg table stand like this! I love this tall table, we've used it for so many different occasions.
Check out this full tutorial on how we made it.
I love the white, gold and soft pink combination.
Since the cake topper was the best match with my home decor, it made me see how easy it will be to throw a simple wedding together, should the need arise.
How to Make a Deathly Hallows Cake Topper with Cricut:
Use the deathly hallows file of your choice (in the free downloads at the end of the post) but use the files without the "stick" part.
Just cut out the deathly hallows triangle or always with the Cricut on cardstock.
I typically do 2 or 3 layers of cardstock and hot glue them together with a wooden dowel or a BBQ skewer hot glued in between the layers of cardstock.

How to Make an Edible Cake Topper:
If you are interested in edible icing art, there are a few ways to do it and you can use my free designs as a template.
Print off and place under rice paper or edible icing paper.
Then mix some royal frosting (with egg whites instead of milk or cream) and add gel food coloring.
Then pour into a piping bag or a plastic zip lock bag and clip off the very corner.
Then pipe the icing images on the icing sheets.
Then let the icing set up and trim the icing paper around the edges.
Then you have a fully edible cake topper image to place on top of the cake.
That's it!
It's easy to create the magical Harry Potter themed wedding of your dreams!
