How to Use Plaid's Fragment Effects:

I love Plaid Enterprises and have been working with them for about a decade!

I use Plaid products in my personal use as well as on posts for my blog and social media.

I love them and I love seeing their new and innovative products released periodically throughout the year.

Right now, stained glass art, resin art and mosaics are trending...and I love that Plaid pays particular attention to the trends and releases products that are on brand and timely for the trends.

They have lines of Gallery Glass that are awesome for a near-stained glass look without the work or the price.

They have a full line of resin, molds and mica powders, for gorgeous resin art.

The new Fragment Effects add a touch of glamour to any art piece...but especially these acrylic frames from Plaid.

Step 1: Gather Supplies

I took a trip to Walmart and bought everything I needed for this gorgeous craft.

I love the hexagon plexiglass frame and bought another one for a future project too.

It's nearly 10 1/2 by 12 inches, so it's the perfect size for a craft that is sure to be the next masterpiece to hang in your home.

I picked up Waverly Chalk Paint in Lagoon and Peacock for the perfect turquoise geode.

If you are in love with a different color, go ahead and pick 2 shades of it and make this geode stained glass art piece match your vibe.

If you haven't used Chalk Paint before, it is awesome.

It's super matte and slightly textured, but not grainy.

It's perfect for painting on furniture to give it an update, but needs no sanding or prep work prior to painting--so it's a dream come true.

Step 2: Painting the Geode Edges

Begin by selecting the darker shade of paint that you have picked out.

I used the Peacock blue and a round paint brush to paint a very messy outline around the frame in peacock chalk paint.

Begin by selecting the darker shade of paint that you have picked out.

For this absolute masterpiece, keep the edges rough and geode-like.

This project takes just a few minutes to paint...paint carefully right next to the frame and then messy around the center.

Paint the equivalent of just one inch of the plexiglass with the peacock blue chalk paint.

Immediately follow up with painting the Lagoon Chalk Paint in a similar way around the plexiglass.
Keep it chaotic and un-uniform in it's application.

Trust the process with good faith...throw perfectionism out the window and just paint an inch of chalk paint filled brush strokes. (No worries, there won't be untoward results)

Finally, leave a clear space and then paint a circle around the center of the plexiglass with the lagoon blue.

It should be about 3/4 an inch thick and be sure to leave clear window peaking through the center and around the blue paint circle for visual depth, texture and variety.

Then let the chalk paint dry completely before moving on to the Fragment Effects portion.

Step 3: Plaid Fragment Effects

Plaid's Fragment Effects are crushed glass with iridescent finish and shine.

Each color of stained glass is a little different, some have backing pieces that appear darker and pieces like the gold are like painted gold nuggets.

All are beautiful and shimmery--I want to buy a complete set of all the colors.

Because these are broken pieces of glass, safe use of the product is recommended.

Plaid has a specially formulated Fragment Effects Glass Chip Binder and Sealer that is made to work specifically with Fragment Effects Glass Chips.

This binder and sealer is unlike anything else I've used from Plaid, and works surprisingly well!

The Fragment Effects come in a wide range of colors.

I am using Turquoise Sea, Clear and Gold for this project.

Again, as you select your favorite colors for the paint, pick Fragment Effects that compliment your colors and you are excited about.

I absolutely love the gold!

The price on these was pretty decent, the glass is cheaper than the sealer, but that is to be expected.

Begin by painting the very edge of the frame and plexiglass with a little of the Fragment Effects Binder and Sealer.

Work about 1/6th of the frame at a time so it doesn't dry before it is used.

I was surprised how little of the sealer is needed to get the fragment effects to adhere to it.

Then use the little scooper and dump out the Fragment Effects in Turquoise Sea right on top of the sealer.

Then repeat the process until the entire outside edge of the frame is covered with glittery glass...but leave some of the Peacock paint showing still.

The turquoise shades give this project a very oceanic vibe too--which is absolutely my vibe.

This would look gorgeous in greens, yellows, violets, reds or pinks too!

After piling the glass around the edge, just to be "sure" the glass pieces on top of the pile would adhere, I poured the sealer directly over the top of the glass in a little stream around the frame.

Not too much that it drips or puddles, but just to glue all the sparkly glass together.

It doesn't dry too fast--it is workable for about 15 minutes so you can use the silicone tool to push the glass pieces to the edge.

Now we repeat the process, this time by painting the sealer around the next section.

The sealer does not need to be painted on carefully, just paint some loose strokes around the frame, creating those geode-like layers.

And then, same as earlier, pour a little of the sealer directly over the Fragment Effects to glue all the piles of gold nuggets together, leaving the little brief passages between colors of paint and glass.

It doesn't take much sealer, I was super surprised at how well this holds the glass in place!

Finish off the geode effect with one final circle of sealer around the center of the frame.

Pour out the clear Fragment Effects and scoot the pieces around in a donut shape with the silicone brush tool.

Then let the Fragment Effects Binder and Sealer dry completely--after drying, turn your frame over a tray and collect any pieces that didn't quite get sealed.

Step 4: Gold Glitterific Paint

Now for my favorite part of this project, the Gold Glitterific Paint!

This paint is packed full of glitter in different sizes and shimmers.

This adds the perfect final geode art finish to this hexagon plexiglass wall art!
