How to Make Cardinal Wood Slice Ornaments (Easy DIY)
Learn how to make easy DIY Cardinal wood slice ornaments for decorating the Christmas tree, adding to gift bags as gift tags or as neighbor and friend gifts to pass out this holiday season.
These diy wood slice ornaments are easy to make, take really no artistic skill and are fast.
Just a few supplies and you can make cardinal ornaments or other varieties, just add stamps!
Supplies Needed for Cardinal Wood Slice Ornaments:
- Stazon Jet Black Ink
- Wood Slices (or cut your own wood slices and sand them smooth)
- Cardinal Stamps
- Acrylic Stamping Block
- Red, Black and Yellow Acrylic Craft Paint
- Detail Paintbrush
- Ornament Hooks or a bent Paper Clip
- Hot Glue Gun
- Rubbing Alcohol or Stazon Cleaner
Step 1: Adhere the Stamp
The cool thing about photopolymer stamps is that they do not need to be stuck to the back of a big, bulky wood block.
Simply peel the desired rubber stamp from the plastic sheet and place it on the acrylic block.
NOTE: If you would rather draw on your wood slice, coat the slice with matte medium first or a think layer of mod podge, then draw with a paint pen or sharpie marker. Drawing directly on the wood slice will damage the tip of the paint pen and the sharpie will bleed a lot.
You cold also paint the back top of the ornament surface with paint with a foam brush, white acrylic paint or blue before stamping...I just like the rustic wood slice look.
Step 2: Inking the Stamp
Press gently on the acrylic block, pressing the stamp into the ink pad.
Stazon ink is designed to be permanent and adhere to many different surfaces.
Press it and stamp it onto paper a few times to get the hang of it.
Then press into the ink and press it firmly, without rocking back and forth on it, onto one wood slice.
The thickness and variety in wood slices means that a clear stamp may not always happen, but the distressed vibe is touch of rustic charm.
Clean the ink off the stamp with rubbing alcohol or Stazon Cleaner.
Step 3: Painting
Now use the acrylic craft paint, mixed with some water for a watercolor like paint, to paint the wood slice tree ornaments.
The water in the paint will make it more translucent but also spread into the texture of the wood, so start right in the middle of the bird and work your way out towards the edges as you see how far the paint spreads.
NOTE: If painting is not your thing, you can still accomplish this in easy ways using paint pens or a paint marker. I recommend these paint pens by Tooli-Art
Cardinals are the most beautiful birds!
I lived in the south for 3 years and loved seeing those bright red bandits flying around and perching in my trees.
I miss them, so I decided to make a cardinal themed Christmas tree this year filled with a variety of wood ornament DIY's.
I know cardinals are also a very dear bird, for people that have lost loved ones, a good omen and a sign of loved ones near.
Make a cardinal bird ornament or two for family, friends and other loved ones that might need an extra boost of love this time of year, a reminder of loneliness and loss--again, these wooden ornaments make great gifts.
Next use black paint to paint the male's little bandit faces.
Aren't cardinals such a unique and beautiful bird!?
These fun designs are easy to duplicate with finding additional rubber stamps that will fit the smaller wood rounds.
Finally add a little flash of white in the cardinals eye to bright the little bird to life.
Add greenery, snowflakes or any other embellishments to give it a personal touch!
These custom ornaments are what you look forward to pulling out of the Christmas decor year after every following year.
Making your own wood slice ornaments is a really inexpensive craft and makes great handmade gifts!
Use other acrylic paints to add brown to the branches, pine trees, or other background natural elements.
On the back of the wood slice, add a personal message to make it an extra special ornament...make a bunch to give to family members, friends and neighbors.
Or gather the family and make a handmade ornament as a fun activity together!
Christmas crafts are so much fun and these rustic Christmas ornaments look fantastic in a flocked Christmas tree from King of Christmas.
You can see the stamping doesn't have to be exactly perfect, and the acrylic paints look watery and loose...but it's exactly that rustic farmhouse charm that makes it so perfect!
Step 4: Finishing Touches
Finish off the ornament by gluing a bent paper clip or an ornament hook to the back of the ornament, or drilling a small hole in the top of the ornament and tying a piece of twine through the hole.
Add some wood sealant or a thin layer of mod podge to the finished ornament...and even add some elements with a gold paint pen for a little glam.
Make a bunch and fill your Christmas tree with cardinal themed ornaments, or give them to friends and neighbors.
I love how cute they turned out and how absolutely simple they are to make!
That's it!
Making wood slice cardinal ornaments is an easy DIY, a fun project and makes a gorgeous natural decoration to act as a reminder of loved ones still near.
Using rubber stamps and stazon ink is the perfect way to make lasting impressions on wood slices and decorate them for the perfect homemade ornaments.
