SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR SUBLIMATION TOTE:
- Canvas Tote Bag
- HTVRONT Manual Heat Press
- Sublimation Printer or Convert an Epson EcoTank Printer into Sublimation (more on this post)
- Sublimation Ink (if converting printer)
- Sublimation Paper
- Heat-Resistant Tape
- Sublimation Print
- HTV or Iron-on
- Cricut Machine or equivalent
Step 1: Sublimation Image
Begin by printing an image on sublimation paper.
I'm using a gradient circle background, since the tote is not 100% polyester, it will be a little more dull transferring onto cotton, so I'm keeping it simple and just the background shape.
Tear carefully around the edges of the image, so there isn't a harsh line after pressing because of the sublimation paper.
Step 2: Preparing Tote
Set the tote on the base plate of the heat press, by turning the top portion to the side.
Press it for a few seconds to get the tightness confirmed and to iron the tote bag.
Then place the sublimation print face down on the tote and secure it in place with some heat resistant tape.
Set the heat press to 400*F for the sublimation process.
It heats up super fast--maximum temperature is 410*F.
The control panel is attached to the machine, but has cord to keep it off to the side, no worries about it getting hot.
There's a time setting button dial, temperature settings dial and power button.
Then cover the design with a teflon sheet or parchment paper.
Step 3: Heat Press
Now turn the large heating plate of the manual heat press back over the top of the tote and press down with the handle.
It should firmly press into the baseplate, giving it not too much pressure, but still firm, heavy pressure.
Then press and hold the timer button for it to begin counting down.
Then lift and turn the heat plate after the timer button beeps.
Wait for the tote bags to cool down a bit and then do a cool peel removing the sublimation paper from the bag.
Pleasantly surprised at the vivid print onto a cotton bag!
Step 4: Iron-On Vinyl
Now change the lcd screen and set temperature to 330*F for pressing iron-on vinyl.
Different materials require different heat and time, so be sure to follow these for the best results.
It only takes a few minutes for the temperature to lower to the desired temperature.
Have your Cricut Maker or cutting machine cut the iron-on in reverse with the shiny side down, and then weed away the excess vinyl.
Then place the iron on onto the tote bag and place the teflon sheet over the top.
Then have the HTVRONT press do it's thing and press it down on the base plate again.
Press the timer button for 2 seconds to engage the timer.
When the timer goes off, lift and twist the heat plate and let the tote bag cool down completely.
Then cold peel off the transfer paper, revealing the perfect finished piece!
