How to Make Corelle Plate Necklace Jewelry DIY!
Learn how to transform vintage, chipped or cracked plates and dishes into wearable jewelry, necklace pendants and more.
Did you have Corelle Butterfly Gold plates? They launched in 1970 and I think everyone I knew growing up had them. This was our family plate pattern.
Make nostalgic jewelry with old dinner plates using lead-free solder, great for handmade gifts too!
Supplies Needed for Corelle Plate Necklace Pendants:
Step 1: Marking
Use something round, like the inside roll of some washi tape and draw circles around the desired patterns with a permanent marker.
I found my Corelle Butterfly Gold dinner plate when I was thrift store shopping, it was a few dollars and had a couple of chips in the edges of the plate.
Step 2: Cutting
Use the Tile Cutting Pliers (2 round disks that cut through glass and tile) to cut into the plate.
This part was the first time I ever used the tile cutters, so I didn't know how well they would cut or how precise I could be, so I just cut the plate in half.
The pliers are actually really precise in cutting a line wherever they are placed.
Experiment with them a bit and then cut out the shapes you've outlined.
BE SURE TO WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!
Cut each circle out as close to the marker outline as possible.
Save the extra pieces for a mosaic if you want to!
Once the pieces are rough cut we can head to the grinder and smooth out the edges.
Step 3: Grinding
Now use the water grinder to smooth out the edges of the glass/ceramic plates.
Fill the tray with water and wrap your fingers in bandage to help protect your skin from getting cut into by the glass.
Grind down all the edges so they are nice and smooth.
At this point there are several things you can do if you don't want to solder.
Alternate Options for nostalgic necklaces:
- Use E6000 and glue a jewelry bail to the back
- Use a small diamond drill bit and water to drill a hole through the glass
Step 4: Copper Foil
Clean the Corelle Plate pendants and dry them completely.
Then wrap the edges of the plate with copper foil so it overlaps evenly on the front and the back of the pendant.
The copper foil is lightly adhesive, so making sure the edges are clean of dust is very important.
Then press the edges of the copper foil down over the front and back of the plate.
Then use a bone folder to burnish the copper foil, pressing it on all surfaces very firmly until it's all smooth, be sure to get the edges.
Step 5: Solder
I recommend using LEAD FREE solder since these are designed to touch the skin.
Begin by brushing some flux on the copper foil.
Touch the lead free solder with the soldering tool to pick up a little bead of solder.
Then trace the fluxed copper foil, leaving a little bead of solder in its wake.
Repeat the solder coating process for the back of the pendant as well as the sides.
Do not use too much solder, keep it light and it will be easier.
Step 6: Loop
Now use the wire and wrap it tight around something round like the flux brush.
Clip off one loop and solder it to the back of the Corelle pendant.
Hold it in place with pliers, since it will get hot, and dip it into flux for an easier solder.
Step 7: Steel Wool
Now that the pendant is soldered, buff the solder lines with fine steel wool.
This will shine it up and smooth out small inconsistencies in the solder.
Then finish them off by washing them with mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush to clean off all the flux and make them shine.
