Even my little Jane approves!
This gorgeous crystalline suncatcher is a perfect craft and a great way to stay busy and creative over Winter break!
I love continuing the snowflake theme into January and this looks fantastic dangling in the window and letting light pass through it like a stained glass sun catcher.

The starfish or sea star kit comes with blue, clear and light green glass chips.
I decided to use my Turquoise Fragment Effects glass chips instead, with the clear chips from the miniature sun catcher kit.
The acrylic suncatcher blank is 6 inches in width, the perfect size for a creative project that can be completed in just one sitting.
Step 1: Trace Blank
Begin by using the included acrylic blank (or one of your own) and place it on a piece of scrap paper.
Use a pencil to trace the outline of the blank so you can make a usable pattern.
Next, use a ruler to make 3 straight intersecting lines for the snowflake.
If you decide to make a different pattern, that's awesome too!
You could make a giant tortoise, the world's rarest whale or just follow the starfish pattern included.
Draw out your pattern, making it not extremely detailed or intricate since the glass chips don't lend too well for precision.
Step 2: Binder and Sealer
Now place the acrylic blank right on top of the pattern you drew and begin by painting a little bit of the sealer and binder on the acrylic hexagon shape.
Step 3: Fragment Effects Glass Chips
Then use the tweezers or just scoot some of the fragment effects glass chips onto the sealer line painted on in the last step.
I like to pour a few glass chips onto the blank and then use the silicone brush and the tweezers to move everything into the precise place.
After situating the glass chips, drop a little more sealer/bonder on the fragment effects with the paintbrush.
Then repeat the process for the next section of the snowflake sun catcher.
I like to work small sections at a time so the sealer doesn't dry before I get to it.
The clear glass chips are shiny all around.
The colored stained glass chips have a mirrored backing, so when working with them, I typically like to place the mirror backing down, so the top is as shiny as possible.
It can be a little more tedious this way...they still look great any direction...you'll see better when we get to the turquoise glass chips.
Again, some close up shots of the Fragment Effects process:
Apply a thin line of the Sealer and Binder with a paint brush.
Line up the fragment effects glass chips on top of the sealer and binder line, then drop a little sealer on top of the glass.
Step 4: Turquoise Glass Chips
Now that the crystalline structure of the snowflake is completed in clear glass chips, let's fill in the center with turquoise glass chips.
Simply drip out some of the sealer and binder right onto the section that needs to be filled in with turquoise.
Spread the sealer around with the paintbrush if necessary and then pour out the turquoise fragment effects glass chips into the center on the sealer.
Use the tweezers to move or shift any of the pieces around as desired.
You can see the darker mirror backing on some of the pieces, and it's totally fine or you can turn each of the pieces over.
Once you are satisfied with the amount of glass chips, set the sun catcher aside to dry and cure completely, about overnight.
Finally, tie the sun catcher up with a ribbon or some twine and hang it somewhere that the sun fragment rays will hit just right and make it glisten and sparkle!
This sun catcher would be great as a Christmas tree ornament or as a handmade gift idea!
I absolutely love snowflakes, the sparkles and the blue tones associated with them--they help give me solar power during January!
This fun sun catcher is a great alternative to the Plaid Starfish Fragment Effects kit and really fun to make!
Pick up a couple at Walmart or order them online and get creative over Winter break making things to add light into your home during the adverse effect of the dark Winter months.
That's it!
Making a suncatcher out of the Plaid Fragment Effects Starfish kit is super fun and easy!
These little glass chips are a great craft as you explore stained glass crafting and make something fun to hang in the window or on the patio.
