Learn how to make the cutest disco ball cherries to brighten up your shelf, desk or table.
This cute cherry decor DIY is chic and groovy all in one!
Disco balls and cherries are all the rage, so they are a match made in heaven, let's get started!
DIY DISCO BALL CHERRIES:
Let's talk about the supplies needed for these disco cherry pair.
I used lime green acrylic and my laser cutter to make the stems and leaf for this craft, I've got some other ideas for you if you don't have a laser cutter...so don't despair.
The disco balls are easy to find anywhere, I even saw some at the dollar store last week.
HOW TO MAKE CHERRY CRAFTS:
If you are fortunate enough to have a laser cutter, here's the png you can slide into your program, outline and cut it out.
If you don't have one...here's the png, you can print it off, cut it out of cardboard, paper or have a cutting machine cut it out for you.
Here's options for stems if you don't have acrylic:
- Cardboard Painted Green
- Green Cardstock
- Green Paper, cut a dozen of the same image and glue them together
- Wooden dowels and a green paper leaf stuck together with a hot glue gun
- Sticks from outside and a green paper leaf with a little hot glue
- Green Pipe Cleaners and Green pom poms leaf
- Wire and Green Floral Tape
- Green Yarn wrapped around Cardboard or Sticks
- Floral Stem Wire and Fake Leaf
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR DIY DISCO BALL CHERRIES:
- 2 Disco Balls (about 3-4 inches in diameter)
- Mirror Tiles
- Alcohol Inks (I'm using lime green and pink)
- Make-up Sponges
- Hobby Knife
- Green Acrylic (or option listed above)
- xTool S1 Laser Cutting Machine (or equivalent)
STEP 2 DISCO BALL CHERRIES: GREEN CHERRY STEM
Begin by uploading the file included above into your laser cutting machine software or XCS (xTool Creative Space).
Outline it, set it to cut with the recommended settings for green cast acrylic, 3mm thick.
Then cut out your cherry stem shape.
**HOT TIP: It's smart to cut your project out of scrap cardboard to make sure it's the size you want before cutting out of your expensive material.
Make sure the machine is clean and well ventilated, acrylic is a smelly one to cut.
Then carefully sweep off the debris and dust into the trash...I use a baby wipe to clean off my acrylic as soon as it's done cutting, so it doesn't kick plastic dust up into the air.
STEP 2 DISCO BALL CHERRIES: DISCO LEAF
Now begin with adding some disco ball vibes or mirror tiles to the leaf of the cherry stem we just cut out of the acrylic.
Flip the mirror tile sheet over and trace the outline of the leaf with a pencil, then go over the line carefully with a hobby knife.
Then remove the mirror tiles that don't fit on the leaf completely.
Peel off the sticker backing and apply it to the leaf.
You can add mirror tiles as individual tiles too, no cutting needed, if desired.
Fill the surface of the leaf with shiny mirror tiles.
I love the edges of the green acrylic poking out on the sides, no need to cover the leaf completely, it's just there to complete the disco ball look.
STEP 3 DISCO BALL CHERRIES: DISCO BALLS
Now remove the hanging portion of the disco ball, they are just styrofoam covered in mirror stickers, so a gentle tug is all that's needed to pull off the hot glue and hanging ornament.
Repeat for both disco balls.
This will give the balls a flat surface to sit on.
STEP 4 DISCO BALL CHERRIES: ALCOHOL INKS
Now get your workstation set up.
Work over something that is disposable or you don't care if it gets stained with the alcohol inks, they are a bit messy.
I found that the color didn't adhere as well when I applied the alcohol ink color to the sponge, instead dot it right onto the mirror tiles.
Dab gently with a make-up sponge, let it dry and repeat if necessary.
The disco balls are a little more tricky, since they are round.
Wear gloves if you don't want pink fingers all day.
Start on the top of the disco ball and add pink (or whatever color you love) alcohol ink onto the mirror tiles, let it seep between the mirrors and color the visible styrofoam too.
Use a make-up sponge to dab the color around and keep it from puddling in one spot.
Work your way all over the disco ball.
If you want to just do half of it and let it dry, then come back and do the other half, that works too.
I just did the top and bottom and then set it down while I did the middle, and then touched up where my fingers were holding.
Now repeat for the second disco ball.
Then let them dry completely.
STEP 5 DISCO BALL CHERRIES: PUT IT TOGETHER
After the alcohol inks are dry, lift up the acrylic stem and leaf and see where they fit best on the top of the 2 disco balls.
Use a hobby knife or just your fingers and remove the mirror tiles that are in the way of the topper spikes.
Then line up the stem and press the spikes into the styrofoam balls, no glue needed.
Really, gluing styrofoam is tricky, hot glue will melt the foam causing BIG problems, so just fitting the topper in tight is the BEST option.
It fits in tight and I can move it around without worry!
This cute acrylic stem could be stuck into a couple of cupcakes too, that would be so cute!
