Unlike making my disco ball shoes that took 8 hours, this mirror tiled butterfly can be done in just a few minutes.

Find an object with straight lines and not a lot of curves and it will be a snap.

Most disco balls are made around styrofoam balls so any styrofoam shape will work great too!

STEP 1: DISCO THE EDGES

Begin by measuring the edges of the galvanized butterfly hanger.

Then cut a strip of mirror tiles that will fit along the edge, mine is 5 disco tiles tall.

You can cut the backing with a hobby knife or just fold a crease and then tear along the fold.

Now peel off the sticker backing on the mirror tile strip.

Place it in the center of the edging of the butterfly and wrap it tightly around the edges, sticking it in place as you go.

Repeat sticking strips of mirror tiles around the galvanized shape, and then just remove one little mirror tile for the hanging string.

It worked out perfectly for the spacing but the cord can be squished a little bit too if necessary.

STEP 2: DISCO THE TOP SURFACE

Now that the diy disco ball butterfly heels are finished, it's time to transform the top surface into a disco party.

I opted for placing mirror tiles on a slight angle with the angle of the butterfly wings, to give it more visual interest.

If you want to keep it all very straight, start with a strip right down the middle of the butterfly and then build the layers from the center out.

I started on the left wing.

Lay a strip of mirror tiles across the top surface and then peel the extra pieces that are sticking off the edges.

Sorry about the blurry picture, but the video tutorial has all of this too.

Now you see the top surface is symmetrical with the mirror tiles on the wings, but the gap for the butterfly body is not a straight line.

I opted to overlap a piece on the center for a little dimension.

Just use a strip of 3 mirrors wide and fit it right on top of the center and slightly overlapping the wings.

You can add disco tiles to any surface, but big flat sections are so much easier to apply the mirror stickers to, rather than applying one by one.

If you are adding mirror tiles to a Styrofoam ball, stick it on bamboo skewers and paint the foam with acrylic paints before adding mirrors for the best results.

Paint it a bright color underneath, paint it silver to match flawlessly or paint it black for a little contrast.

The actual mirror tiles can be colored using alcohol inks and a make-up sponge if desired.

This lovely mirror butterfly works best if there's a light shining on it, it will reflect bright light squares all over the house!
