How to Make Gold Acrylic Cake Topper with Laser DIY
Make the perfect gold acrylic cake toppers for event decor, that special day, or for a touch of sophistication in a small cake.
This step-by-step tutorial will guide you through making your own DIY cake topper for a special occasion.
Party enthusiasts everywhere can make this stunning centerpiece for birthday parties and the best part is I'm giving you the free file!
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR HIP HIP HOORAY CAKE TOPPER:
- xTool S1 20W (or equivalent laser cutting machine)
- Gold Champagne Acrylic from Houston Acrylic (this is what I am using, it's almost mirrored)
- Gold Acrylic (xTool brand that is diode laser useable)
- Gorgeous Cake (see my friend @somethingspecialcustomcakes)
- Baby Wipe
- FREEBIE Hip Hip Hooray Cut/Engrave File (can also be use with paper in Cricut Design Space)
If you don't have a laser cutter or access to one, you can also cut this file out of glitter cardstock or poster board using your Cricut machine, some hot glue and sturdy prongs (like wooden skewers) to make layered cake toppers.
FREEBIE FILE DOWNLOADS HERE!
I've had my xTool S1 20W (a popular choice) laser cutting machine for over a year now, and the previous version before that, totally worth any additional costs.
It's been so fun and makes party decor and craft projects a breeze--it's a must-have addition to the craft room or small business.
I love being able to add a touch of elegance to a party theme by cutting out acrylic, and they've improved cast acrylic and added black solid colors core to this gold metallic acrylic so a diode laser has no issues cutting it out!
xTool Machines:
- xTool F1 Ultra 20W Fiber and Diode Laser
- xTool M1 Ultra (4-in-One Craft Machine)
- CO2 Laser xTool P2 Machine
- xTool F1 Portable Laser Cutter
- xTool S1 20W or 40W ( I have the 20W--see this post)
- xTool M1 10W Deluxe RA2 Pro (this is the one I have--see this post) xTool RA is the Rotary Attachment for doing tumblers, cups, etc.
STEP 1: PROCESS FILE, ENGRAVE AND CUT
Begin by loading the freebie files into you software program of choice.
If you are using the xTool Creative Space (XCS), you can just load in the xcs file and all the work has been done for you!
Remove the protective film from the acrylic, place it on the honeycomb riser and hold it in place with the magnetic clamps.
Then auto measure, add the cut surface area and double check all the settings and click process.
The machine will engrave the Hip hip hooray phrase out of the acrylic first, followed by cutting out the shape.
If you are using a Cricut Maker, upload the 2 files, line them up together, size them together, alter colors and cut out of sturdy paper.
STEP 2: BABY WIPE
Before removing the acrylic from the honeycomb riser, wipe the dust and debris off with a baby wipe.
Then take the acrylic to the sink and wash with soap and water.
The best part about your own cake toppers is they are custom cake toppers for a birthday party or other event...and you can wash them and save them for the next party, baby shower, wedding, or any day that needs an instant festive boost.
Just stick the cake topper in the beautifully decorated cake and it adds a lot of fun and festive glitz to the table settings and party supplies!
I love gold acrylic happy birthday cake toppers, but just saying "hip hip hooray!" can be used in so many other celebratory occasions by simply using the best material for a long lasting impression.
WHEN TO USE A CAKE TOPPER:
Stylish cake toppers are the perfect choice, whether you are a professional event planner or just a human trying to make a simple celebration a little more fancy.
Size the file down a little smaller and use them as cupcake toppers too.
I like the single layer topper design, with the engrave and cut out, but there are many other options...like circle designs with monograms or detailed script.
I love making and using cake toppers--they go in a stack of pancakes or a sandwich around here!
THAT'S IT!
