NO KNITTING NEEDED:

I do not knit.

I've never tried and have no real desire to learn right now in this stage of my life.

I bet someone who does knit could do a much better job than me at this rainbow wall hanging with pom-pom clouds...and I can't wait to see it!

Originally I wanted to make my rainbow a mobile, so it could hang in an open space and be completed on both sides, so spinning wouldn't matter.

Unfortunately, my rainbow was too heavy, and needed to be mounted to a panel.

Still looks bright, cheery and fun for a wall hanging, nursery decor, and could be hanging in a posh shop in New York City...Anthropologie maybe?

WHAT IS RAINBOW ORDER?

I grew up with rainbow order grilled into my head...it is nearly impossible for me to color a rainbow out of order...I can start with a different color, like orange and then continue through the rainbow, but I am not a fan of mixing it up.

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet...and then all the shades of color in between.

This project features 15 colors, but can be made with less...even 3 colors would look great...like Pink, Yellow and Aqua!

Learn the way this Natty knits (lol, I only have one friend on the planet that calls me Natty) this rainbow and you won't be overly impressed, but it does make this craft project possible for all skill levels with this new technique!

This i-cord knitting and stitching technique could easily be used to attach to clothing to make a rainbow sweater, and a fun project to crochet Winter blues away.

NOTE: National Rainbow day in the United States is April 3rd, so this is perfect!

STEP 1: MAKE KNIT CORDS

Use the I-cord knitter machine to make lengths of knit cord in all the shades of the rainbow.

I am using 15 colors; including 4 shades of red, 2 yellows a dark blue and lots of pink!

Begin by knitting a 24 inch cord in the deepest red color of yarn you have...or pick a different color and mix the colors however you desire.

This i-cord knitter basically does a 4 point garter stitch, just cranking out a beautiful cord.

Then follow the directions on the i-cord knitter on securely tying off the ends.

Make the next color of yarn cord one inch shorter than the last and so on...until all the cords are knit.

STEP 2: WIRE CORES

Now line up the cords from the longest to the short rows of knit cord.

I wanted mine to have a little structure in them, I was hoping it would be free hanging when I started it...so the wire helps it hold it shape.

I ran a piece of 14 gauge wire through each of the colored knit cords and did a back loop at the end of the wire to keep the cord on the wires secure.

Also, cut a piece of wire longer than the longest color and string wood beads on it, loop the ends of the wire to hold them in place as well.

TIP: If you are just going to mount to a wood panel, like mine, go ahead and skip the wires and just hot glue them down.

STEP 3: SEW TOGETHER

Now take a tapestry needle and coordinating yarn and do a stitch here and there to connect the rainbow arches, 2 at a time.

Again, if you are just hot gluing this to a panel structure, there is no need to do all the stitch work.

Maybe if you stitch them carefully and tightly together they will hang better than mine did.

Sew the outside arch of the rainbow to the wooden bead wire...I just tacked it in place about every 5-6 beads.

Repeat the sewing process for each rainbow arch color.

STEP 4: CLOUD POM POMS

Now you will need a grouping of fluffy and full pom poms.

I had a great time making pom poms with this chunky alpaca blend yarn that I found at the thrift store.

Note: Pom Poms use a lot of yarn, so get ready.

Put the 2 halves of the pom pom maker together.

Then begin wrapping the yarn around the curves of the pom pom maker.

Put the 2 halves of the pom pom maker together. Then begin wrapping the yarn around the curves of the pom pom maker.

Wrap the yarn around the pom pom maker tons of times, until it's really thick.

The more times you wrap it, the fuller the pom-pom will be.

Wrap the yarn on both sections, just run the yarn over the hinge and keep wrapping.

Wrap both sections evenly with yarn.

Then fold the pom pom maker in half and connect them with the little latches.

Then use scissors and sink them in the trough of the pom pom maker and begin to cut all the yarns.

Don't pull or tug on the strands, or they will come out, just snip them as evenly as possible.

Tie it off tightly in a square knot.

Then open up the pom pom maker and pop out the cute fluffy pom pom!

Use scissors to trim off the long strings and shape the pom pom into a fluffy little ball.

Once you have a cluster of various sizes of pom-poms made, you can sew them onto the rainbow, I hooked them through the wires.

Again, I was trying to make this mobile reversible so it could spin.

Now it's ready to hang...sort of.

You can see how saggy it is.

I just wasn't secure enough for the weight of the pom poms and the pull on the rainbow arches.

STEP 5: HOT GLUE GUN

Finally, I decided to just mount it to a wood panel for the sturdiness I was desiring.

Again, if you are going to make a rainbow pompom wall hanging, plan on hot gluing it from the beginning and take out the wire and sewing steps.

If you are a knitter or a much better sew-ist than me, you might make it a free hanging mobile for full 360* fun.

If you do, please post a picture and tag me!

Overall, I think it's adorable.

It's a cuddly rainbow with soft colorful yarn.

I love the ease of knitting cord with the i-Cord Knitter Machine, it's been fun and worth the money.

I really love the natural wood beads and wood panel with it too...it's the juxtaposition between the soft and the natural.
