How to Make a Beaded Dragonfly Whisk DIY (Easy Craft)
Learn how to make a beaded dragonfly from a whisk!
This fun upcycled craft is easy for a crafty mind to imagine and give new life to an old item.
This cute dragonfly can be made in about 30 minutes and then decorating and drying time.
Let's get started!
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR DRAGONFLY WHISK CRAFT:
- Wire Whisk (inexpensive whisk from the thrift store or local grocery store)
- Wood Beads (pony beads could be used too)
- Hot Glue Gun (optional)
- Wire Cutters
- Pliers
- Craft Wire (or pipe cleaner)
- Mod Podge Glitter
- Paintbrush
Step 1: Remove the Metal Disk
To begin, use wire cutters and use pliers to remove the center disk that holds the wires in shape.
This was a little tricky, so if you are doing this with a group of young children, have this done ahead of time.
Step 2: Bend the Wires
Now move the first loop of large wire whisk to the side, bending it at the handle of the whisk.
Continue bending the loops of the whisk to fan them out like 2 pairs of dragonfly wings and the top center antennae.
The dragonfly is beginning to take shape!
The transformation of the whisk to a dragonfly is a good parallel to a dragonfly life cycle and their past life as an underwater larvae.
This is the perfect craft for the home mom and the elementary school teacher to do with the classroom!
Step 3: Clip the Antennae
Now use the wire cutters to cut the center loop of wire.
Cut a short piece of wire off each of the remaining wires, so the beads will easily fit over them.
Step 4: Dragonfly Head
Now thread a smaller wood bead and a larger wood bead onto the antennae to make the dragonfly head and thorax.
Thread the smaller bead on the 2 wires first.
Now fill the bead with hot glue.
If you are doing this with children, this step could be skipped or use white glue.
Then fit the larger bead on the top of the hot glue and squish the beads together.
Use the pliers to curl the antennae a bit, as desired...again this part is optional, but it will help the beads stay on.
Step 5: Beaded Wings
Now unwind a short piece of wire, just a few inches longer than the whisk loop.
Now thread craft wire through the center of the whisk, right under the beads and then twist it back over itself.
Make sure it can reach the end of the loop with about 3 inches of wire to spare...if not, cut a longer piece of wire.
All whisks are different sizes, mine is a medium size, so measurements aren't that helpful.
Now thread beads on the wire.
I am using natural wood beads, they can be painted with acrylic paint and decorated with glitter.
You can use pipe cleaner and pony beads or other large beads for an easier craft with younger children.
If you want to be extra creative, use smaller beads and give the wings lots of layers and details.
String beads until they reach the end of the loop of the whisk.
Then wrap the wire around the end of the whisk loop a couple of times and around itself, then sink the wire back through the beads and clip the wire off close with the wire cutters.
The wings of the dragonfly are taking shape!
Repeat this beading process for the other 3 wings.
I love the look of the wooden beads au natural...but these could easily be painted or dyed any color.
I did decide to add some glitter to mine though, to give it a little flair.
Step 6: Mod Podge Glitter
I'm using Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge Glitter.
You do not need to use dishwasher safe, I just love this Mod Podge and use it on anything that needs gold flecks of glitter!
I painted on a thin layer of Mod Podge and then let it dry, then repeated 2 more times for adequate glitter coverage.
If you are using pony beads, they are already colorful, so no need to add anything more.
Upcycling crafts is a wonderful outlet for creativity, I just love how this whisk metamorphized into a dragonfly!
A fun idea would be to collect a bunch of whisks and create lots of buzzing dragonflies to use as dragonfly garden decor.
Just a single dragonfly would look so cute poking into the dirt of a potted plant.
That's it!
Make a dragonfly from a whisk for the perfect upcycled project!
It's a great idea to make this dragonfly beaded craft with a group of children or youth too.
I love taking things that have outlived their usefulness and transforming them into something new, upcycling is the best!
