Making big beautiful cakes, known as dummy cakes, with plaster is a great option for a photo prop, but not many people want to decorate their home with a fake cake.

But making a cute scallop frame is the perfect addition to home decor, a birthday party, any big day, party favor crafts and more!

This craft is perfect for a craft with first time piping skills or practiced cake decorators!

I love using these scallop frames, they are such a great option for craft projects and they really make this frosting frame look complete.

Craft stores don't carry these frames though, you need to get them from plaidonline.com, but you can pick any frame for a slightly different look for your faux cake frame.

STEP 1: PREP THE FRAME

Begin by opening up the frame by bending up the prongs on the back and removing the backing board.

There is no glass in these frames, but the opening is 5x5" for this square one, so it's perfect for a picture, painting or hand-lettered quote.

STEP 2: PAINT THE FRAME

Next step is to paint the base of the frame.

This color of paint by Martha Stewart, Pink Carnation, is identical to the Soft Pink Super Thick, so it's perfect.

It doesn't have to match, the fun part is that you can mix the colors however you like!

I love this Martha Stewart Multi-Surface paint, it's thick and creamy and really only needs one coat of coverage.

The scallop edges of this frame just look like a real cake vibe...I love the look of the scallops!

Paint all the edges and borders and the top surface.

Then let the picture frame paint dry completely...just an hour or so is all it needs.

STEP 3: FROSTING THE FRAME

Now it's time to add the frosting to the cake...I mean the frame.

This cute frame is going to look good enough to eat!

The paint is creamy and thick, just like frosting!

It will hold and maintain stiff peaks, so however you lay it down, it will dry with very minimal shrinkage.

You will need your piping bag and piping tip.

Cut about 1/4 to 1/2" off the tip of the piping bag and slip the piping tip into the bag and the tip should come out of the opening to reveal the full end.

It does not need the full bottle of paint, probably about 1/4 of the bottle, but you want enough in the piping bag to be able to squeeze out little dollops of frosting paint.

If you have never used a piping bag before, practice on a piece of paper or cardboard, you can even scrape the paint back into the container.

Place the tip of the piping bag near the frame edge, then squeeze out a small dot and lift gently to make a little icing star.

Repeat all around the border of the frame opening.

STEP 4: ADD SPRINKLES

Now that there are little frosting stars all over the frame border, add some of the clay sprinkles.

These are perfect sprinkles, made of polymer clay, so they don't bleed color and dry in the paint perfectly.

Use tweezers if necessary to arrange sprinkles in a desired way, like making sure that the colors are spread around and not a clump of the same colors together.

STEP 4: ADD SPRINKLES Now that there are little frosting stars all over the frame border, add some of the clay sprinkles. These are perfect sprinkles, made of polymer clay, so they don't bleed color and dry in the paint perfectly. You can never have enough sprinkles, right!?

I just randomly sprinkled them all over the paint until I felt like there was enough here and there.

Then I decided it needed a big swirl of frosting on each of the 4 corners, so I used the paint to make bigger stars.

Then of course I added more sprinkles to the corners!

This would be such a fun craft for a birthday party, like little party favors...and then they could be delivered with a photo from the party after they dry.

Finish off the corners with a few more sprinkles.

It's so cute!

I love how it turned out, I want to make a bunch more in all the colors!

STEP 5: DRYING TIME

Now it's time to dry.

It probably depends on how thick of paint daubs you have on your project, but the instructions say to give it 48 hours to dry.

So set it aside for a couple of days and let it dry completely.

It won't shrink much and maintains the details of the peaks, so perfect for all your faux cake needs!

Then you can add a special photo, a calligraphy quote or a little painting to the frame and close up the back again.

That's it!
