How to Use Plaid Velvet Crush (Flocking Craft DIY)
Learn how to use Plaid Crafts new FolkArt Velvet Crush Flocking set for velvet-like finishes on various surfaces.
These fun flocking kit sets come in a variety of colors, in a paint and flock of the same shades.
It's easy to upcycle and give that flocked effect to old knick-knacks, decor items, picture frames, jewelry boxes, flower pots and more!
Let's get started!
The Folk Art Velvet Crush flocking powder adheres to a variety of surfaces in a simple two-step process.
The easy 2-step application just needs a little drying time in between steps, otherwise typical craft projects take under 30 minutes.
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR VELVET CRUSH FLOCKING:
- Plaid Folk Art Velvet Crush (Comes in 10 different Colors)
- Knick-Knack (Here's some ceramic birds similar to mine)
- Paintbrush
- Piece of Paper
Step 1: Upcycle an Item
Notice this bird has a chipped beak and is in need of a glow up.
I found this darling ceramic bird thrifting and thought it would look great with a tactile velvet finish, but this works on a variety of surfaces, so find something around the house to upcycle.
Step 2: Paint with Tinted Adhesive
The tinted adhesive is the same color as the soft flock fibers, for the perfect match.
The tint goes on first as a base layer, then a second layer is used as the adhesive for the flocking.
The first step of this two step flock is painting the tinted adhesive all over the surface of the bird or other knick-knack.
The adhesive is painted all over the subject and allowed to dry for one hour.
It doesn't have to be a completely smooth and perfect layer of paint, just give it a coating.
It's a little trickier to paint on ceramic, but no need for a second coat.
Just paint it on and let it dry for 1 hour.
Step 3: Apply the Velvet Crush
To apply the Velvet Crush to the bird, first begin with the tinted adhesive again and paint in the desired area for flocking.
Paint it on in small sections, I started with the underside of the bird.
Then open the Velvet Crush bottle and squeeze a generous amount of powder fibers on the wet adhesive.
Tap off the excess fibers and dump the unused powder back into the bottle for future use.
Once I flocked the bottom half of the bird, I did all the rest in one painting/flocking.
Again, squeeze the flocking on the item and dump the excess back into the bottle.
I did not wear a dust mask, but that would be smart if you are doing something big.
Also, don't turn your ceiling fan on while you do this one!
Now any home decor projects can have that luxe feel, mossy look or even the look of snow, since this comes in 10 different colors!
Each Velvet Crush will cover 3.5 square feet of a specific item.
I love that you can't even tell that his beak was chipped, Velvet Crush is the perfect upcycle medium!
Little birdie looks good as new and almost moss covered!
That's it!
Give your knick-knacks a glow up with Plaid Crafts Velvet Crush paint.
