 Geeky Crochet Hooks!

If you crochet or know someone who does...and they are geeky...
they will love these!  Great gift idea!

The Elder Wand from Harry Potter
Lothlorien leaf and the One Ring from Lord of the Rings
King Arthur's Excalibur from Merlin/Arthurian Legend
Sonic Screwdriver from Doctor Who
Lightsaber from Star Wars
I began with several small crochet hooks.
You can use any size hook...I recommend the metal ones,
but I am sure the plastic ones would work too...after all,
I've made lightsabers and sonic screwdrivers out of plastic pens.

You'll need bake hard polymer clay too...like fimo or sculpey.
(I used a combo of both, since I am running low on stock!)

"And desire for the Elder Wand, the Deathstick, unbeatable,
 invincible, swallowed him once more."

I began making Prof. Dumbledore's Elder Wand from Harry Potter.
I started with some brown...I swirled it with some white
to give it sort of a marbled "wood-grain" texture.

Take a thin "snake" and twirl it around the handle.

Then roll it between your hands to smooth it out.

Then add some "knots"...

 Awesome.

"Okay, this can function as a sonic blaster, a sonic cannon,
and a triple-fold sonic disruptor. Doc, what you got?"

 For the Sonic Screwdriver:
Begin with the same technique of twirly clay around the handle
and smoothing it out by rolling it between hands.

Added silver features and a blue ball on the end.

 A flat shape like this

 Fits tightly around the tip...

 With a slim black line...

A Sonic Screwdriver worth of the Doctor himself.

The Lord of the Rings inspired...
Lothlorien Leaf and the One Ring.

"One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them."

Same start as the others.

With a twirl of green like a vine.

To make the ring, I just pressed a piece of gold clay and inscribbled
some markings on it.

And just wrapped it around the end.
I also make a 3 pointed leaf and outlined it in silver.

"Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon, for a more civilized age."

Next, the Lightsaber!
I started it the exact same as the others.
Capped the silver in black...and added little clay circle buttons.
I was going to just leave it as the handle, but
decided to add some of the blade for fun and color!

"In a land of myth, and a time of magic… the destiny of a
great kingdom rests on the shoulders of a young boy. His name… Merlin."

And last but not least, Excalibur!
We just watched all the Merlin seasons, so this was a fun one.
It started the same, all silver.
Then added on gold, then black...and then some silver adornments!

Now they are ready for some baking!

Place them on an oven sheet.
I baked them according to the package directions.
It was about 20 minutes in a 250* F oven.
Remove them from the oven and let them cool.
I find about 30 minutes is good.
Then enjoy your newly geekified tools.

 Now, off to crochet something!

I love these, they are really beautiful! For a moment, when I only saw the small picture in my blogger account, I thought they all were sonic screwdriver-screwdrivers, that would be funny as well ;-)

I tried your sonic screwdriver pens, by the way! I made 8 and it took me a long time, like 4 hours or so, because I love the smallest details. Then I tried to harden them in the oven, and all the pens shrinked. Some screwdrivers were ripped apart- one looked like it exploded... Some looked okay from the outside, but the middle part... -sorry, I can't find the right word, in German it is "Mine"... I mean the part with the ink in it, it just wouldn't fit into the pens because they were too tight. I fixed the "survivors" with hot glue, so the children can play with the screwdrivers, but I was really sad my pens didn't work.
But I like to try it again, the really were so cool!

One of the coolest things about camping for me is the toys. Over time, I've ridden trail bikes, driven four-wheel drives, camped in storms, camped in remote areas, camped on mountains and camped by the beach. I can't think of a trip where a gadget of some type hasn't been involved. Gadgets make life easier, cooler and definitely more fun.
